Very difficult with bright sunshine and high temperatures. Hatches dropped after early morning and it was tough to find a rise later on. Nonetheless, a great day on a beautiful river.

A completely different day to yesterday. The cold wind had dropped and the air temp was a few degrees higher as a result. There were fish active throughout the beat as we arrived at around 10am, which continued up until our departure at 3pm. A few true Mays were spotted among the yellow Mays and a good number and variety of olives. Many of the trout were caught on cdc olive emerger patterns. Klinkhammers also worked in faster water with some fish coming to nymph too. We ended up with 17 trout to just over 2.5lb, all returned.

An excellent day of guided fishing with Oliver Burch of Wye Valley Fly Fishing. My first attempt at river fly fishing so the advice and guidance was invaluable. River was 0.5m on the gauge and a good flow. Missed one fish from the pool by the holiday cottage. All fish were taken upstream of the bridge. All bar one trout fell to nymphs. The last trout was taken on a small dry may fly imitation late afternoon after observing some sporadic rise close to the far bank This also gave Oliver the chance to sort out my wayward casting! A great day in a fantastic location.

First the good - the fishing was very good - 6 of the fish being between 2 and 2.5 lbs. Hatches of olives at both ends of day - midge feeders during the day in certain spots. We fished only dries. Also noted a lot of fry paradoxically perhaps given the comments below.

The bad - pollution. From the main pool below the bridge to way down the beat the rocks were covered in algae. In the pool below the bridge the rocks were caked with a green/black algae that broke off in large chunks and we would see pieces floating further down. Other areas were coated in brown algae. The worst algae I have seen on the Usk and we were not sure of the source - Penpont itself ? Sennybridge sewage ? farm effluent ? Also makes wading a bit tricky as slippery stones.
