Water level very high, limits some of the usual places to fish, especially with fly. A few fish rising around midday. 2 rainbows caught and a few small browns.

Spin fishing Usk Reservoir Thursday 04 May 2023. Windy conditions with wave action causing discoloured water at shoreline. No fish seen and no strikes on lures used. I think the trout had gone to the "fish equivalent" of a pub for a pint and laughed at me. But I enjoyed the day.....

Looking at the weather forecast there was a brief window of opportunity today before the rain set in. River was low though, needs the rain. But in good nick. There was a stiff upstream breeze when we started but this dropped and the day turned soft and overcast with some drizzle later.

There were sporadic hatches through the day…. Large and medium olives, brook duns and willow flies and even a couple of mayflies. The typical large stoneflies were also about.

For us Usk fish are only catchable when they are rising. There were a few occasional risers but for an hour in one pool there was a lot of activity. Rose 7, hooked 4, landed zero! Must be getting rusty …. Or is it that we can’t say God save the Queen any more when a fish rises to a fly before tightening?

The usual size 14 dun parachutes did bring a couple to hand…. The first a gentle sipping rise from a 15 incher, the second a charging slash from a 17 incher. Not quite Penpont porkers but beautiful fish… a day that was par for the course on the Usk. A good start to the season…..

Fly fished the section for about six hours. The Redbrook gauge was reported at 0.97m. Saw several fish move on the lower section of the beat but not sure if resident or moving through.

Weather was good overcast with occasional sunny spells, river at .56 on the Ross gauge. Mick the Ghillie was brilliant with
his help and advice to put me in the right places to catch my first ever salmon. Had a fish show in the Vanstone in the morning and another after lunch at the stones (Possibly the same fish running through?) my inexperience didn't help
and a better caster of the Fly may have had a chance but still an enjoyable day and have learnt a lot about this beat from Mick, so will return and have another go.
