Didn’t quite live up to expectations - more my poor river craft I expect. Fished 4 different swims including the bottom meadow, lucky stone and by the stile near the house. 1 Chub from each spot - best around 5lb.

Saw 5 different otters and a very big salmon leap out the water twice in front of me. A lovely beat but sadly no barbel today.

Lost a feeder and bent a few hooks on snags.

River on the rise following recent rain. Fished nymphs but not reaching the bottom as some deep holes along this stretch. A few misses. No fish on the surface despite a hatch of olives late afternoon.

Anticipation was running high after a cracking breakfast to mop up the previous nights Local ale. Warm weather and an overnight shower meant the river was running a little coloured. A slow morning on the lower swims was made bearable by some hard won far bank Chub whilst my angling partner continued to disgrace himself with some barely legal fry that hooked themselves on some maggots he smuggled past me. Having caught little I introduced him to the banker of a swim, off the Croy at the far end and he chanced upon a trio of well proportioned Barbel, having the absolute cheek to land one knocking on double figures. This was the last straw so I took residence at last light and battled a magnificient Chub to the net where upon it was devoured by the resident Pike. Looking forward to returning, hoping for better company next time.

A wonderful late Autumn day at Whitney Court..warm ,still & slightly overcast between periods of blue sky. The Wye was up a foot & a bit & going through at a reasonable pace. We all fished side by side at the bottom of beat 5 using pellets, luncheon meat & pepperoni. It was a day when the big fish were out to play with PB doubles of chub & barbel for two anglers. All fish in tip-top condition, fin perfect & fat as pigs.

Wildlife kept us all entertained as usual with a kingfisher diving after minnows all day on the opposite bank, redwings back in numbers & chattering away to each other, every species of wildfowl known to man & a flypast by a peregrine to mention a few.

Considering the amount of water going through , visibility was very good. There was a decent sized pike on patrol in the shallower water near the bank causing big boils as it lunged at some unfortunate fish on three occasions for any pike experts. We didn't have the kit or the know-how.

A special day for us all, ( & the farmer was very friendly). Thanks as usual to all who make it possible at WUF.
