A different day today when I set off from the outskirts of Leominster , overcast , blustery and reading sixteen in my truck …. Wasn’t sure where I was heading , but had seen Edw and Llanddewi were free , kind of followed my nose , and ended up at the Road side pull in at Llanddewi at ten bells …..

Nice bimble down to the start of the beat …. Eeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkk she was low ,I did thermometer dip test , reading 15 degrees , so all ok , …… no real trouty water till I came more or less opposite to where I’d parked the truck on the pull in , then some sport was had , at the heads of the trouty pools …. Real hard work with that bright green filamentous algae that sticks to line , dry flies , everything !!!!!

Still , that aside , sport was not toooooooo bad to be honest , fished an eighteen Para iron blue and an F fly , both with success , prospected most of the rises , but cast to two , and had the both , so that was nice . Five lovely Ithon brownies to the net , three of them nice chunky ten inch fish , also an eight inch grayling on the dry , very satisfying take too !!!!

Some serious changes to the river shape , and from what I remember a lot of pools gone , new ones there , and masses of piled up gravels , a good winter Will settled this old girl down , she looks in a bit of a state to be fair . More gravel than water ….. sad to see ….

Anyway , must have been a while since I’ve fished the Ithon , was nice , good flush out needed , lovely and open , and always fun here , steady wading too , nothings an effort here , just bear in mind it’s a long beat , I chose the field walk back as opposed to that mad fast road , there’s only sheep in there at the moment , so all good ….. a pleasant three hours , and some good sport …. Sorted !!!!!!!

Back on my favourite beat and had another great day. Despite some rain, the river is still low but at least it’s cooled off a tad.

I started very early and as I was setting up on the Lucky Stones I was greeted by a stunning rainbow. It was the clearest I’ve ever seen and prompted an impromptu burst of Judy Garlands “Somewhere over the rainbow…” which, annoyingly, then led to an earworm that lasted pretty much all day. (Apologies if you’ve now got it).

Unfortunately, there was only a pot of chub at the end of my rainbow, amounting to 40 plus through the day in many different sizes, shapes and ugliness on various methods (rolling meat, feeder with meat / pellets). The chub monotony was broken in the morning by 1 beautiful bronze barbel, an eel and a gudgeon – a rare catch for me on the Wye and reminded me of many happy days of my childhood spent on the banks of the Black Country canals before they got filled with abandoned shopping trollies, Ford Anglias and dead bodies.

The middle part of the day was very quiet bite wise, so I took a break and enjoyed the entertainment provided by the armada of canoeists who had evidently been sent downstream with the brief on how not to drown but still be an ace buffoon at the same time. They were all very friendly and apologised for any disruption caused, none more so than the grannie and grandad with two grandkids who somehow managed to do a handbrake turn mid river and smash directly into the boulders on the opposite bank, causing all four occupants to violently jerk forwards as the boat hit the rocks. If it had a been a Mini Metro there’d be a whiplash claim.

Headed back around 8.30 before the bats came out to play.

Stunning beat, total tranquility and loads of fish – what more could you want?

We were 4 rods and Shaun and Kyle guided us for the day. Intermittent sun and cloud with a little drizzle. Most fish caught on small sedge dries and a few on spiders/nymphs. Most fish circa 1 lb and a few 2 to 3 lb. A lovely day expertly guided.

Overall a very nice day on the bank, other than a couple of short sharp showers weather was warm if not a little breezy. Water levels very low and action slow over the day. Picked up a few early chub on cage feeder and then went for a wade to the island. Nothing doing from either end so returned to the Step and quickly was in to a lovely barbal, made my day as was first Wye barbal for me. Love the spot!

Llyn at least 1m below spillway, with large areas of lake bed exposed. Saw a couple of carp jump but none caught. SUP and inflatables arrived mid-afternoon.
