Very challenging day, low clear river and sunny. Similar conditions to a successful day same time last year, several swims tried today on the lower half of the stretch with various methods for barbel without success this time.

Spent the day guiding my nephew with a bit of fishing. All fish caught on assorted patterns, some to his own fly tying creations, 6-11” and all quickly released. At least the same number of fish on and off. Lovely day despite the river being on it’s bones still.

Just the 1 barbel around 6lb and lost one - line severed on rocks. Very low river level as expected - fished the woodland area which had a few feet of water and although very little activity until late evening still a nice days fishing.

Late afternoon session with fly, hoping for an evening rise. First couple of hours dead apart from one brown trout. A couple of good takes around 8 pm but nothing hooked. No proper evening rise as the north westerly breeze kept blowing.

1 eel around 8.30pm followed by a Barbel around 7Ib at 9.40pm.
