Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:2

13 x grayling 15 - 18 inches, trotting. A remarkable bag of grayling including a large number of 17 inch fish. But, as noted elsewhere on the Irfon this year, where are the shotts? No sign of small or medium sized grayling at all. Water at 0.55 and clear as gin. A most enjoyable day if very cold.

Beat:The Rectory Fishery

Fishing:Member Rod

The off-season trout took a goldhead pink shrimp. Two grayling a general nymph pattern, with tunsten bead, orange hotspot and blue straggle string highlights.
Lots of colour/ flash was working but elsewhere on the beat fish were taking more traditional hare's ear patterns.

Day was aborted after an hour when mate found a drop-off in the river and took a dive, head first into the chilly Monnow.
Once he changed into my emergency bag of dry clothes it was decided to head home, as he was quivering more than Shakin' Stevens. Merry Christmas Everyone.

A really, really, beautiful stretch of river - some of the prettiest river I've seen on the WUF Passport, and maybe it's a good trout beat in the summer.
Two of us, both competent grayling anglers, fished hard from 11-3 today and didn't have so much as a tap, we didn't see a single fish. A quick look back through recent catch reports during grayling season suggests a low stock of fish.
Gorgeous water, I not sure I'd go back again though.

Really foggy morning which stayed around the river all day, making it very atmospheric. Wonderful to be on Wye to clear the mind in uncertain times. Nice big chub kept me busy. Caught a surprise sea trout too.

Very hard day on middle hill the river looked in great condition but the fish failed to feed until late in the day and then only for a very short spell. tried a variety of baits but only 2 chub caught.
