My first time on the Towy. Cold blustery conditions with some surface hatch activity. All trout were caught on CDC emergers (sizes 16 to 18) and returned.

What a frustrating day and yet exciting. Fished Beat 2 just downstream from the island. Plenty of water movement and quite windy blowing downstream. So first the frustration - I missed a barbel (more later) - and loads of canoe traffic. The wind and current meant it was virtually impossible to keep bait and feeder still in the gullies. I probably wasn't fishing heavy enough so even a 30g feeder full of groundbait and a 12 or 15mm pellet as hook bait was washing downstream very quickly. Line was also being dragged by the current.

Now the exciting bits, when it was possible to hold bait in position I had a number of bites culminating at about 10:00 with a solid take from what was easily a low double figure barbel. Just out of range of my landing net it simply sat dead weight on the bottom of about 3 - 4 feet of water, and then in one sudden upward lunge it snapped my hook length about 3 inches above the hook. It would have been my first Wye barbel and definitely means I'll be coming back for more. No other bites were converted.
