A lovely afternoon; the river low, but fish rising. I caught one small grayling on a dry fly and lost another fish, unidentified. I had taken a friend along to teach him the elements of river fly fishing. He had a really good time and even rose a fish, though he had never cast a fly before. A really enjoyable beat, though in many places you need a short rod and a skilful cast.

River low, hot and bright through the day, fish first up and evening, hardly a touch through the day. Barbel to meat and pellet, Chub to meat and pellet, mainly meat. Best Barbel 8lb. the other was an Eel.

River very low and weather bright this evening. I also probably made a mistake in fishing familiar swims rather than adapting better to the conditions. Anyway, the result was a clutch of insignificant chub and no sign of barbel, whichever bait I offered them.
