Disaster. Freezing cold, snowing. The river was rising, and colouring up. A couple of salmon showing. Access to the river is unmaintained and very slippery where no bankside vegetation exists.

Fished trotting maggot starting around 10:00 with the river clear and at a nice level. By the time I'd finished at 15:00 the river had risen 15cm and had started to colour up. Having taken note of the Foundation's news letter on spawning salmon and trout I used my 12ft rod to minimise the amount of wading, however, got caught up a couple of times in trees. Saw one salmon and heard a loud splash which I presume was another salmon. The fish I caught were spread out and not shoaled up. Good day despite the wet cold weather.

Access from lay-by to water is easy and brings you to Lady Alexanders Catch. This is a superb pool and is full of trout and grayling . Wading is easy in this pool and it is perfect fly water. We trotted bait and fished fly and caught on both consistently. Fish were between 3oz and just over 1lb. I tried to investigate upstream and downstream areas but failed due to my age and dodgy paths.

Hooked a salmon around 8-9lb on a goldhead nymph. Played it for about 10 mins and it released itself. One out of season brownie. No grayling to be seen anywhere. This beat used to be full of fish. I’ve fished this beat twice this year now and not a sign of a Grayling. I think some investigation work needs to be carried out. I won’t be returning anytime soon.
Lovely day out though.

Very festive start to the day with frosty conditions. Ross on Wye looked amazing with the river steaming early morning. It warmed up as the day progressed when the sun came out. I managed one 7lb Barbel and lost a larger one at the point of netting, hook just pulled out. The Chub were in a hungry mood. Lovely day. Fished maggot feeder.
