A first look at this beat. As the WUF description implies, most of it (especially above the bridge) consists of steep gradient fast flowing shallow riffle. I spent some time throwing nymphs into this to no avail. Later in the afternoon, with a fair few mayflies coming off, an occasional rising fish showed in a couple of the deeper slower runs. After missing two takes to a para Adams, one from a sizeable fish, the third one (the smallest of course) saved the blank. A pleasant few hours in a beautiful valley.

Good morning activity with some pale wateries hatching, but fish taking the nymph. Hoped for a Mayfly hatch later but weather turned and I only saw half a dozen. Great beat as always.

My 1st trip to the Usk yesterday, Not much fly-life, a few pale wateries, and just the odd rise. Managed 3 takes on a iron-blue dun, missed the lot. Watched a salmon around 15lb making its way up the middle of the river. Other than a downstream wind, conditions and the river looked good.

Ten wild brown trout up to 11” on the dry fly, mostly Grey Wulff, and about the same number again seemingly well hooked but never netted. Handful of mayfly in the afternoon with nice increase in fly activity at about eight o’clock.

No fish seen or rising - a few mayflies egg laying into the Gutters.

Had great expectations: a warm, muggy overcast day with just a gentle breeze. Some olives, pale wateries and black gnats coming off. WBT on third cast of the day was a good omen. Then nothing . A dribble of flies over the course of the day but no sustained hatch, so resorted to nymph. Report received of a salmon jumping at the bottom of the beat

I caught beautiful trout with dry fly when start hatching on river.

Dry balmy overcast evening. Plenty of surface action until wind got up late evening. Most fish caught on spent fly patterns. Largest circa 2 lb.
