Beat:Abbey Dore
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:1
4 x grayling 10-13 inches, 2 x out of season trout 10 and 15 inches, Pink Shrimp. Just slight colour and 0.401 on the EA gauge at Peterchurch, so it's viable now although I'm getting a bit old for clambering around in the jungle on this beat. The grayling all had that blue sheen special to Monnow fish, once seen not forgotten.

Stake out first visit to the Rectory as I’d like to fish it next year on a salmon ticket. Fishing on a season grayling permit to have a look at the beats. Four fish around the half pound mark all took a gold head nymph pattern on the flats.
A pleasant but chilly short session. Will return soon.

Very misty murky day, air like pea soup. River still a tad high. A few grayling about to around 14oz but hard work for them. Plenty of salmon in evidence, hooked 2 on nymphs (eventually came off after running hard downriver!) Several dead ones on the bank half eaten by otters. Its a long walk to the river - make sure you have studs in your boots the bedrock is pretty slippy.

All fish returned. Trout were ravenous for trotted maggots and difficult to get past them to reach the target grayling. Nothing bigger than 12 oz.

Hard to hold bottom today with the number of leaves going down & catching the line & lifting the weight into the current. All chub caught in slack water. Plenty of salmon showing for some reason. Saw a very large unidentified bat species doing acrobatics over the river for about 20 minutes in broad daylight... seemed to be catching something the way it was quartering the one area; About the size of a swift.
Chub seem to go a darker colour at this time of year?
Great day to be out and about, quite mild & the grass seems to still be growing.
Thanks once again to all concerned.
