After a heavy frost the night before conditions were always going to be tough but under the circumstances we were happy to catch a few decent chub to just short of 6lb plus a couple of bonus grayling. Only criticism, it would have been nice to know the track past the orchard was closed necessitating a punishing walk through the mud.

With the gauge at 1.8m didn’t expect much . Found a nice slow slacking area on the edge of a pool and trotted double maggot , feeding every other cast . Soon got the fish feeding and had regular takes of small chub and grayling with an occasional dace and OS trout . Around midday had a few better grayling , with one bang on 2lbs. Finished the day with a lovely chub of 4lbs 15oz

I was only able to fish for the afternoon thanks to work, but grayling were rising sporadically when I arrived at this gorgeous stretch of water, and I managed to land one (and lose two) on a size 18 Vermont caddis. Some dry fly fishing was an unexpected treat, but most of my time was spent nymphing, which produced three fine out-of-season trout up to 15 inches, and one much larger fish who might have been a salmon, but who shook free the hook after a brief battle.

First ever Wye blank. Tried close in for most of the day in the crease of the water. Then tried further out for a while with pellet and barrell shaped krill boilie wrapped in paste for hookbait. All in all fished 11 different swims - hard work but its a no from me! Very friendly farmer and his wife came up for a chat and a great setting to fish in .

Desperate to get out grayling fishing I had been watching the river level slowly coming down and with more rain forecast decided to take a chance and book the beat. Having checked the river level just before leaving and saw it was rising again my fears were confirmed as I drove over the river at Pembridge noting the amount of water and its grey colour. Fortunately had put the float rod in and some maggots as fishing the fly would have been impossible. Caught a very small grayling from the margins early on and a 6" trout from just above the weir at the bottom of the beat. Five hours of fresh air and solitude. Will keep watching the levels and return again soon.
