Beat:Middle Ballingham & Fownhope No.8

Fishing:Coarse

No. of Anglers:2

Whilst in the lay-by getting gear out of the car, another car stopped and the welsh driver asked if we were fishing here today. When we said yes, he said he had been planning to fish it for pike but, if we were fishing it he would go elsewhere. It was quite clear from his knowledge on the beat that he fished it fairly regularly. Later during the day, someone else started fishing at the bottom end of the beat, they packed up and moved on when they saw us. Seems like this beat is well fished but not by people who have paid their money to Wye Usk. Perhaps a bit more policing would be in order.

Beat:Gromain & Upper Llanstephan

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:4

After being washed off in September and November, we finally managed to fish this beat before the end of the year. Thanks to WUF for arranging the wash off when the office was closed over the holidays. The river was at 1'10 on the Erwood gauge, so it was high but very fishable. It was also very clear, with the gravels visible when wading waist high. It was a mild day and looked promising, but 3 of us struggled with heavy nymphs and trotting. We only managed three very pale out of season trout all day, and could not find any grayling. Still, it was great to be out and on the river. My car just made it up the track from the fishing hut. It wheel spun all the way up, and needed a push and all the wet leaves cleared off the track. I also lost a glove. If anyone finds a left handed Simms fingerless glove, probably from just in front of the fishing hut, then could they put it in the hut and I will get it when next next in the vicinity. Thanks.

Last day of the year and great to spend it at the Creel. Very quiet drive down and very tranquil on the back. Fished one swim all day concentrating on maggot feeder. All fish caught on maggot, nothing on pellet. Had 7 nice chub and lost two, pulled out. Needed 4oz to hold in the flow using bow method, drop back bites. No barbel even though river was 7 degrees. Fabulous New Year’s Eve. Here’s to 2020

Beat:Cammarch Hotel Irfon, Middle Beat

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:1

10 x grayling 10-18 inches, 4 x out of season trout 8-11 inches, long trotting (with my second-best rod). Several 16 inch fish and one specimen at 18 inches. The Irfon looks just fine now, either for trotting or the fly.

My first time on The Dee. What a lovely river! I will be back when the trout season starts. The day was beautiful sunshine but blustery. I saw no hatching flies or fish, oh except a salmon, who, to be Frank, was a bit of a show off! He was doing his best impression of a jetski!

With the river at exactly two feet on the Llanstephan gauge - the acknowledged upper limit for fly fishing - i

River dropping and quite cold so thought catching was probably a long shot but managed a couple of nice barbel early in the morning.
