Cold east wind, dull with low cloud. Just a short flurry of LDOs around 1400, but few fish rising to them. Very difficult fishing. First time I’ve ever blanked on this usually productive beat. Spring seemed to have been put on hold.

A cool day with just a few olives coming off between 12.30 and 3.00, no march browns. Fish were caught on size 14 olive para emerger, the largest was 16”. Other takes were missed or distant catch and released.

First time on this beat, and a real challenge. A real mix of water with slow glides and some fast riffles, and some very deep holes ! Trees overhang most of the beat, so a small rod is needed to make the most of the water; and a good place to practice your roll-casting and casting sideways under foliage.
Fished upstream from the bottom of the beat. Had nothing at all trying nymphs and wets - no nips no tugs - nothing. Nothing rising so persevered with nymphs until the afternoon, and suspected a blank. Then spotted rises in a most unlikely looking slow and shallow run towards the top of the beat. Lost lots ! - but managed to secure 2 lean but healthy trout with an olive CDC emerger (sz.16) - both returned safely.
There are some really nice spots on this stretch, and I'll certainly try again.

3 hrs spent on this beat, 2 of which were needed to access any likely water. No fly life and no sign of any fish, a disappointing reunion with a stream I had fun with some years back.

Just 2 two fish in five hours fishing. Varible breeze, overcast
and 8C. Both nice fish about 1lb and fought hard. Buzzer hatch in the afternoon which brought a few cruising fish to the surface but generally hard work but there again any day on Talybont is worth the effort.

A bit of an odd day, conditions were flirting with being ok. It was chilly and a little windy but a warming sun appeared and there were small upwing hatches spattered throughout the day. The fish didn't really respond, we worked hard for 6 fish, on caddis nymphs and small olive/March brown dries. A lack of quantity was made up for by quality, one at 17", 2 at 13", and smaller fish at 12, 9, and 8". Some other heavy fish were lost.

It's a nice and varied beat, some of the lovely streamy water that did nothing for us this time will come into its own later in the season. We will be back again.
