Gave the Duhonw a bash this morning , three hours there , was superb fun , River nice height when I tackled up with my usual small streams outfit at about half nine , things looked promising as I left the truck and mooched down to the beat start . . . . . .

I did notice from about half ten some LDO' s already on the move , good to see and maybe boding well for later . . . I initially fish a single gold head nymph , Holy Grail , and my first Duhonw brownie was from the tail of a deep pool great little scrapper , and about eight inches , looked tubby and in great shape , seeing as its so early here , and the water was still cold . . . .

Second fish of the morning was further up , near the first bridge you come too , with the strange array of culverts under the bridge to release the water , great scrap again , this time tail of that pool , on the Parachute Adams , really hammered it too , again about eight inches , I was a little surprised , but there was a good smattering of Olives by then , probably mid day ish !!!

I did do a kick sample of the river bed into my net , and its full of life , lots of gammurus , and stonefly creepers , the odd caddies ; great to see . . . A really fun three hours , will be back when it warms up here , and I think surface sport will be fun , if the one I had on the top was to go by , spot on. Back soon !!!!!!

First outing on The Usk today, in the optimistic hope of a springer after all the recent rain and high water. Two trout and one big chub took a copper tube early on, and had a bit of entertainment with small olive hatch pm where we missed fish after fish that took a March Brown. A nice day out to start the season.

I started at 10.30am and a very sparse trickle hatch of LDOs started. It never really got going but the fish were picking off the few flies that were on the water. A cold and strong downstream wind made casting and presentation difficult as well as ensuring that few flies stayed on the surface for very long. I managed a few in the bridge pool then went up the top and had some fun with spiders. At about 3pm there was a moderate hatch of March Browns that lasted for maybe 20 minutes and the fish obliged. Within my tally for the day were 4 fish over the pound, the best going a pound and a half.

Lovely day but little action. March brown hatch for 20 minutes around 11.30 switched to a dry March Brown and missed a big and aggressive take. Hatch went off and little else all day. Tried various locations and fly types but no sign of any life - still a great day though!

Fishing was hard that day. Fish either was not active or very picky. I reckon :) After several hours I managed to catch 3 trout around 25 cm. Method: spin. C & R

PS Sadly I have to report that Taff river after winter high water looks like a skip. I found there bicycles, mattresses, cables, microwaves, toys tons of bags. The list is endless as amount of rubbish there. It's very sad as fishing in the Valley can be very rewarding. I presume it's all beyond control of Merthyr Angling Association but I thought I mention this as a warning to more "nature conscious" anglers and/or anglers who are hoping not only catch beautiful trout but also to admire nature.

Why cant we have this water in May! Still v big 2ft 7", but Bridge, Ty-Mawr and Gravel catch were working. Saw one big fish travel through Ty-Mawr, and the trout were savaging any fly that was worked fast in shallowish water
