Water high and clear, and a stiff downstream breeze. More fish lost than caught, but managed to secure 3 nice fish all caught with small weighted nymphs in fast water. All safely returned.

13 x trout 8-12 inches, dries - Olive Jingler, March Brown Jingler, spiders - Waterhen Bloa, Dark Moorgame, Hare's Lug and Plover. River still pretty high - I funked fording it at usual places and went round via bridge - and not so very much in the way of hatches, but fish definitely prepared to come up. I'm told there was a good March brown hatch yesterday.

My first visit to WUF fishing so this was very much a recce . River .4 on the gauge - just after I started fishing a guy appeared on the opposite bank who said it needs to be .35 or below. I fished for a couple of hours with a heavy nymph but nothing doing. About 11am a few LDO’s (?) started coming off but nothing rising.

This was the second part of my recce day having fished Llanddewi in the morning. The sun had come out and perhaps because of this the water seemed clearer but still pushing through . No fish showing but a nice stretch of water to fish for an hour or two

11 x trout 6-9 inches, Goldbead Hare's Ear. A very nice morning with, like yesterday, the trout in surprisingly good condition and already forward in feeding positions in the runs. However, The trip was rather spoiled art the end by finding a couple of travelling folk engaged in bait fishing from the new footpath. They didn't want to leave and their language was colourful to put it mildly, but they did finally decamp when I made the calls to the EA and police. EA will keep an eye on the area.

Beat:Bideford Brook

11 x trout 6-10 inches, Goldhead Hare's Ear nymph. It's a bit early for the small streams but, the levels being as they are on the Usk, there was not much other choice available for running water. In fact, although the water was still fairly high and turbulent, the fishing seemed quite advanced - like the rest of the spring - with fat little trout in nice condition in the runs as well as the pools. I saw large dark olives and a couple of rises while walking back to the car lunchtime.

Brook running fast but clear. No sign of any fish and none seen rising throughout the day. Hatches of small fly from about 1.00pm through the afternoon. Mostly used small pheasant tail nymphs but not a bite. It’s similarity to a chalk stream is misleading . The stream is badly obstructed throughout the length of the beat and has a great deal of farming rubbish and debris in the water - this is not a managed beat! For much of the beat the banks are closely fenced with barbed wire on both sides and there are stock gates across the brook. All of this makes fishing from the bank tricky, the wading must create disturbance in a brook this size and because of the fencing there are limited places to get out.
