River very low and clear. It was very sunny all day. Lots of dace and an eel caught. Lovely stretch but not ideal conditions.

Having had a trip in June to the lower Wyes which was defeated by floods, this trip to the Upper Wye was defeated by quite low water (8" at Llanstephan gauge), blazing sun and heat (25 degrees), and probably my ineptitude. The river seemed very quiet. I saw no fish move and despite a trickle of sedges and other hatches, no rising trout or grayling. I covered all the "low water" beats listed in the excellent notes. I also met a couple of kayakers peering over the fence at the Heirag falls. I told them I didn't think their double kayak would really be suited to shooting the rapids. Eventually, they came to the same conclusion and spent the next 30 minutes, dragging and scraping it across the rocks and then shot straight through as I fished the bridge gutter. Oh well. They were nice enough.
WUF note there is an arrangement whereby canoes keep off until the end of the season of when there is a spate which rises over the red line on the Llanstephan gauge

First time on this beat and wont be the last.
River looked like it was on its bones, and in need of a good flush out.
Found fish in the deeper pools, but they were very skittish. Vanishing as soon as the leader hit the water, probably my poor technique.
3 trout caught on dries and 1 on a nymph.
Spotted 3 very nice fish but in very awkward areas, having to wade to get near them spooked them immediately. They dont get big by being stupid.

It has been 5 years since last fished this beat, still as beautiful as we remember, wont leave it so long before returning again.
Fed a few swims whilst waiting for my son to arrive and as I went to collect him from roadside car park met Glynn and the landowner who were very helpful with updated info on this beat. Managed Chub and 5lb Barbel on first 3 casts of day at the Pylon run, alas that was to be final Barbel of the day. Plenty of further sport with the Chub tough from various swims including a couple on trotting gear that were both pushing 4lb.
Despite having to check booking with Landowner, WUF were back to me within 24 hours with confirmation so do not let this put you off booking this gem of a beat. Only wished we had booked to return on 2nd day rather than trying Whitehouse.

Our first time on this beat and despite the very low river we enjoyed the experience of fishing this interesting place.A combination of feeder fishing and trotting yielded us a rather surprising variety of species which included an immaculate 2lb 5oz Perch of the sort which Mr Crabtree used to bag up on....we also caught a feisty Trout in amongst the chublets, dace, bleak and minnows...Two good Barbel and a chunky Chub came late in the day and we will certainly visit the venue again in the near future.

River at about 8" on the Llanstephan Gauge, bit low, but overall it fished really well. Fished the Rocks a couple of days before and took all fish on dries. Today all fish were taken on nymphs. What a difference 2 days and 10 miles makes and this makes wild fishing so challenging and enjoyable. Fish caught throughout the beat, plenty of decent grayling to 15" and one very angry wbt of around 14".
