No fish caught, saw remains of some barbel that had been dragged up the bank and killed by otters and also a dead trout that looked like it had escaped otters.

The river was pushing through and very coloured. Two of us fished but sadly no grayling to report.

Very cold day with strong winds, river was high and coloured following recent heavy rain, fished for 5 hours on variety of methods and baits all to no avail.

Arrived to find the river well up, banging through and rising buts it’s so enchanting scenery on this beat that I tried anyway.
Fished close in on meat, pellets and spices boilies. Didn’t catch this time but a very enjoyable day out.

No outstanding catch return here! River levels extremely high as the early morning recorded a level of 3.5ft and by the end of the session was 8.5ft! Was thinking of a wash off but you never know with barbel and floodwater as in the past have done well on other rivers with high levels. Fished my usual line of attack with baits etc but very difficult to hold anywhere apart from the near margin. Suffice to say it wasn't to be this time round and didn't even have a single bite. Still a cracking place to be in the Wye valley

The weather was good but overnight rain had raised the water levels somewhat and soaked the surface ground. Being new to the beat we decided to work our way downstream on the left hand bank, nymphing and trotting as we went. The beat covers two fields, the first was fine but the second, being by far the largest was an 'experience'. Unfortunately, the land owner must have recently embarked on a clearance project which will eventually increase access to the river. But at the moment it is like a WW1 battlefield with thick claggy mud and numerous felled trees and stumps. This made the walking in waders very, very heavy. In the long term the improvements will be worth it but in the short term think twice and perhaps use the right hand bank for access. Very little evidence of fish - perhaps they had been disturbed by the clearance work. Not the best of days, only one oos brown trout, but worth another visit.

1 Trout

17 x grayling 11-16 inches, 3 x out of season trout 10-15 inches, trotting and Tenkara. Some rain fell last night, but with rapidly rising temperatures this morning, snow and ice melt from the hills running into the river looked like a bigger threat. The level started at 1ft 11 inches at Llanstephan and crept up inch by inch during the morning. At this point grayling were definitely prepared to feed. However, by lunch time we had air temperature 10 degrees and quite a hot sun, the river started to rise rapidly and also to discolour due to muddy tributaries. By 2 PM, with 2ft 11 inches showing on the gauge, grayling had definitely switched off. I hate fishing in snow-melt, so called it a day!

Very cold start to the day, however temperatures started to rise around noon and the fishing improved. Three very good Grayling taken on a jig hook tungsten bead nymph. Good company as well with Chris Charnley

3 Grayling

A cold, cold start to the day but the fish weren't put off too much. As per previous reports, the grayling were on the small side and found in the runs rather than the pools. Successful flies were the pink shrimp and red tag bug.
