Well with the weather promising good things again today , got up at four , few jobs , had the pooch a good walk around too , let the hens out , fed the pigs , and was off to sunny Cregrina , or so I thought it may be , but driving there , misty on the bendy A481 road to Builth , nice conditions to be fair , reading about eleven in the truck , good start to the day . . .
Parked up at the bridge , and bimbled down to the start of the beat , river looking low and very very clear . . . Opted for a Para Pheasant Tail for starters , see how the mop flops !!!!!
Things were good and had my first brownie on at ten passed six , happy days , and a cracker too , about eight inches , lovely markings these Edw fish , and one can be very different from another . Worked my way up , some bubbling little pools , but keeping low and kneeling got a cast away in most places , lovely splashy takes , some fish this morning only five or so inches , still great fun on light gear . . . . Fishing my usual six foot , two weight , perfect for here !
The river changes literally as soon as you go under the bridge , think I had to hand about fourteen brownies by the time I'd come to the bridge , it's more livelier water at the lower end of the beat , I did come across some lovely bigger fish in the slower deeper sections up past the bridge . Only did about three quarters of the beat , getting out a couple of fields up from Glanedw Farm .
A superb four hours sport , with twenty one to hand , some over ten inches in that tally , and two clonkers as well !!!!!Great fun . Also fished a small Para Iron Blue , again lots of interest , and some lovely hit son the fly . . . . Some even somersaulting will attempting to hammer the dry ever so funny , smaller excitable six inch fish ,, thinking they are great white sharks , little feisty fish , Greta fun !!
Will head back here again very very soon ,, nice change from my usual Hundred House beat of the Edw , and some fantastic water too , although could do with a top up I think !!!! Some mayfly still about here , and plenty of sedge and other terrestrial insect activity , in fact by half eight , it was alive down in the Cregrina valley , and some lovely rises in the pools , all in all an awesome few hours loved it , back very soon. !!!!!!!!!!!. . . .

I have fished many of the Wye and Usk beats and have never posted a negative report until now, access to the river upstream of the parking is ok but the flow is slow and deep not ideal for Barbel. Downstream of the parking where the shallower faster water is all overgrown with no access to the water. There is also no marker upstream to show the end of the beat and it would be very easy to encroach on to the Goodrich Salmon fishery. In my view unless work is done clearing access to the downstream part of the beat this fishery is a waste of money.

River low with a distinct brown tinge. Very few rises and just a trickle of flies coming off. 2 trout, 2lbs and 1lb, both returned. Dogs in the river and then, in mid-session, an inflable kayak came down the river. I politely explained that the Usk was not a navigable river. They professed ignorance.
The fish were taken on a nymph and a dry fly. Lovely stretch of river, but it has a lot of non-angling public pressure. (I have photos of the 2 characters in the kayak, if any use - let me know.

Warm and sunny but not too hot. Fished mainly beats 2 and 4 on feeder, using pellet or luncheon. A nice narrow run down from the old house gave a few barbel and chub on the saturday - top weight about 7lbs. A beautiful part of the river, with the pub and campsite right in the middle of the stretch making life very convenient. Will undoubtedly be returning!

Day 2, we fished the same stretches on Sunday with same tactics and similar results. Two of the party caught their first ever barbel which was tremendous. Had looked forward to this w/e for weeks and spent a fortune on refreshing my tackle bag....and then it was over. Already plotting our return!

I have fished the Edw wild stream many times but never Hundred House. The description has always put me off, “meandering stream” and all that. It is very different from the other Edw beats which run faster. On Hundred House here are long stretches of unbroken water and this meant needing to go slowly and carefully to not disturb the fish. I started at 11am and walked off at 6pm, having only done 2/3rds of the beat - that’s slow!
What is very much the same at the other Edw beats is how productive the fishing is. 25 WBT all fell to dry. Most were the normal sizes for Edw trout at 6”-10” except for 3 exceptions. 2 fish at 12” and 1 massive fish at 16” which had my 3WT bent double, gave me a personal best for the Edw, and sent me away very happy.

Great sport this afternoon with the weather a bit cooler than of late.
Fished various methods on the tenkara rod all caught fish today.
Most trout took a black magic nymph either fished single or duo and some later to a Para Adams.
Usual size range 4 to 10 inches.
