My first day on the Wye for the new season at one of the most picturesque beats on the river. The river was low and clear but rose 2-3 inches during the day. Met the Ghillie (Glynn) as I was unloading and as usual he was very helpful in terms of where to fish and what was working in terms of hook-link lengths. Fished on the beach at the inside of the bend upstream of the mouth of the Lugg and targeted the 'V' around half way and then 2 thirds across slightly further downstream where I found the chub. 29 barbel in total, with one small fish of 2lbs and the largest 9lbs 2ozs, with all the rest between 4lbs and 8lbs. All caught using an open ended cage feeder with the ends blocked with ground-bait and filled with micro halibut pellets. Size 10 and 12 hooks with 2 halibut pellets (caught on 4ml, 6ml and 10ml) glued on the hair. Used 12lbs hook-links of 15 inches and then changed to 2ft of 16lbs and continued catching. Used my Daiwa Infinity and Trefor West Lone Angler barbel rods with 12lbs and 10lbs main-line respectively. Also landed 9 chub using the 6ml pellets, with weights ranging from 3lbs to 5lbs. Another fabulous days fishing on one of my favorite stretches of the Wye. I hope to be back very soon and thanks to Glynn for the advice and stories.

Only two of us on the beat today some colour in the low water and luxuriant weed growth. No interest in our flies and 2, perhaps 3 fish seen.

This was my first day on this beat. The weather was cloudy and a trifle drizzly but it became sunnier as the day went on. Judging by the colour of the exposed rocks the water was fairly low and rather less than brilliantly clear. Very little sign of fly or fish.
I started fishing at about 11.00 and half an hour with a BlackGnat was unproductive. For a further hour my Adams Parachute was equally unsuccessful but when I reached the section by the house (with no access to the bank) things warmed up and I took 6 5" or 6" brownies. On the last stretch in sight of the bridge a few mayflies appeared so I put on a Spent Mayfly and immediately landed another 6". Finally I saw some promising rises under the bridge and brought an 11' to the net. This was so deeply hooked that I was unable to release him.

Beat:Talybont Reservoir

Fishing:Trout (Stillwater)

Fished 1130-1730 in good conditions, cloud, occasional light drizzle and mostly a decent SW wind. So seven trout was disappointing. Fish 10-15", all bar one were carrying fish lice, Argulus, some with large numbers. This explains why trout were seen jumping. Argulus also seen on sticklebacks in the margins which probably explains why there are so many on the trout. Very little rising. Resident tern thought about taking my fly.

Fished top end of the beat last 2 pegs, pellet and feeder. Great day for so early in the season lots of chub all of which were over 2lb with biggest about 4. Barbel came steadily if you could get the bait past the chub.
