Scraping ice from the car windscreen on a clear sky freezing morning did not fill us with much confidence before heading off to the Creel. We arrived to a glorious early winters day but a very cold river...But much to our surprise we found the obliging Chub feeding and bagged 13 good fish with all the action in the afternoon.Another highlight was noticing a lesser spotted woodpecker resident on the beat which was somewhat unexpected and capped a great day.
Thanks WUF..

A lovely sunny, wind-free day. 1.12m on the BW guage. After a cold frosty start, the temperature eventually reached the heady heights of 13 degrees but the water is now cold at 5 degrees...brrr! We mixed a bit of nymphing, trotting and emergers on the top. We only had three fish drowning maggots mainly because we got distracted by catching fish on GSB, HE emergers and a dark olive Ducks Dun! We saw an LDO and a single rise well before midday which diverted us from trotting and tempted a few fish up with the DD. In the afternoon, until about 3 p.m. there was a small but quite prolonged hatch of LDOs, and what looked like some aphids on the wing, and the grayling duly rose. With the sun going down and increasingly cold feet after a couple of hours up to our backsides in water, we retired content not long after 3.30 p.m. Fish from 8 - 14". Jagged or long-distance released plenty of other fish on the emergers as well, so lots of surface activity today. A very pleasant five hours fishing!

What a beat! I started at the top and worked my way down. I was on the move for most of the day trying to explore as much of this stretch as I could. I only managed to get just over half way before having to turn back up to fish my favourite swim before the light was lost.
As an SSI area this is a challenging/adventurous beat and I really enjoyed the terrain It makes it so much more enjoyable (in my opinion) when you have to work to where you want to fish.
I long trotted all day with reg maggots using an ultralight 13ft rod and a pin loaded with 5lb line. Many of the runs held fish, but I found after 2/3 fish the bites dried up, so I moved on, but when you have this much water to go at its not an issue. I was trying to find a bigger shoal, which I found at last knockings, and had to give in after 5 Grayling and an OOS brownie.
I will be back before I get to old to tackle this stretch again!

Not a touch all day; Was dry, bright & cold...too cold I think. Need a little rain & a bit of colour in the water maybe as it was crystal clear today.Kind of knew it would be hard but can't think of a better way to spend a day off.
Many thanks WUF & river owner .
