After being washed-off the previous day the river had dropped more than a foot overnight and had cleared, though still carried some colour. Caught two brown trout in the first hour, one of 12" the other 16", both on spiders. Thought I was in for a really good day but took nothing else, despite a few knocks and pulls.

The river rose by about half a meter and the pace increased from mid morning until late afternoon. Most of the fish were caught as the river level was increasing. The best barbel was estimated as 7.08 and all fish were caught using feeder and pellets. Very nice stretch of the Wye with plenty of wildlife to make the day even more interesting.

4 of the barbel caught on this beat were around the 1.5lb mark which really does bode well for the future! Fished a number of swims and despite unintentionally dipping a leg in the river on one of the wooded swims, we had an enjoyable day. Most fish came from the upper stretches of this beat, usual pellet and feeder tactics. Biggest barbel matched our biggest fish the previous day on another beat.......8lb 8oz. Perfect end to our 3 day trip to the River Wye.

Beautiful stream - raised and missed a fish, but not many signs of trout otherwise - was a lovely day out though.

In what was to be a theme for the weekend, we had to be flexible with fishing due to water levels. We didn't even attempt Ty Newydd at Erwood, knowing the Wye levels would be favouring Salmon fishers rather than us Trouters. From experience the nearby Edw is sometimes accessible even when its destination (Wye) is raging. After a slow start, the Cregrina beat was very productive. All fish caught on an Iron Blue dry, and returned.

Very nippy start 6 degrees C , but some nice autumn sun warm things up. Water levels just right but not a sign of a fish all day.
Nice pint of Wye Valley HPA in The Bell to finish the day in the sunshine.

Four anglers travelled up from Oxfordshire, two of whom were looking to catch a barbel for the first time. Arriving just before lunchtime, river conditions were excellent, coloured and flowing following significant rain in the week before. Early signs were good for two of the group, settled in the first swim to the left of the tree line in the middle of the beat... they had a few fish immediately. The other two rods picked a swim further upstream, which despite looking promising delivered nothing. So around 3pm, they moved downstream below the other two where a few bites were to be had. All in all, 15 barbel were caught between four rods, along with a solitary modest chub. I was a little surprised by the lack of chub, I've also seen more eels on this beat when fishing it before (and I even tried luncheon meat on a number of casts, without a nibble!). However, all in all this will go down as a very good day's fishing as both of the newcomers were relieved of their barbel virginity. All fish fell to pellets below groundbait/pellet feeders. Surprisingly, given the excellent river conditions, there were no anglers on the far bank? So we had the stretch to ourselves which suited us just fine. Thanks to WUF, beat directions were great, we parked through the gate in the sweetcorn field, and subsequent access to the river was easy. I'm sure I said this the last time, but I can certainly see us coming back here in the future.
