I spent the day trotting and caught small stuff and the odd bonus chub, but the fishing was hard even though we waded through a lot of the the top section to try and find some decent fish. My pal had a 9.3 barbel on a static bait as well as a decent chub and another smaller Barbel. Tried the Gravel Island down from the Orchard area in the evening (where I had had previous good sessions) but didn't get a bite

8 x trout 6 - 14 inches on Parachute Adams. A nice average size for a small stream of 10-12 inches. Breathless heat this morning, heat-haze obscuring the mountains, valley grass burnt white, cattle in the shade and no birds singing. Best place to be, without a doubt, was waist-deep in the water under overhanging trees.

A beautiful location the Wye, but unfortunately very hot conditions (29.5 degrees). River was low and clear and plenty of weed to deal with, only managed to catch an eel and the sun!!! Finished at 2.30, it was just too hot and a football match to watch. Many thanks to The Wye & Usk for the opportunity to fish such an idillic spot.

Was due to try the main river but put off by spending all day out in the heat so head this local-ish beat for an afternoon.

River was very quiet, only seeing one fish rise consistently. One trout and one grayling caught in the faster water while the other three trout all caught in slower stuff above the weir. Hadn’t gone that far up before - turns into a wild stream with access and casting becoming a challenge.

The best trout of the day, a 15”-er, was caught of an absolutely pathetic cast into some very slow water. Hadn’t seen the fish move but he walloped the fly almost as soon as it hit the water. All fish released safely.

Thank you to the WUF and the landowners.

2 trout on small gnat
Hot day, a few fish rising, but less than when I visited last month. Also less room now that the vegetation has further grown, so 8’ rod feels too long.

Hard fishing, as expected on such a hot day. Banks very overgrown so access to the river tricky in places.

1 Grayling
