The river was low and the sun was blazing but still manage to catch a few, all on the feeder with pellets.

I spent most of the day on the top half, with the pocket water fishing well carrying a good flow of cold water from the Elan dam release. The usual plan of attack with long leader nymphs in the morning and Dries in the afternoon which unfortunately was cut short by heavy rain, a black foam beetle pattern was getting a lot of interest. The Grayling were all of a good size with a 17"+ the largest, the best trout was 16" and in fine condition.

I've fished this beat many times before in previous years and have never seen it so low. The water temperature was like a warm bath! Arrived at the river around 6pm and fished till dark. 3 barbel to around 5lb taking extreme care to rest them prior to release. Broken at the hook by a huge take at the very end of the session - made the heart beat rather fast!

My first visit to this beat - and a generally favourable impression

I note that the other angler on the beat thought there was compensation water in the river. With no reference point, I did not appreciate this at the time - but the water certainly felt cold

Anxious to explore the whole of the beat, I may have rushed through productive water and spent too long walking the bank and/or fishing skinny water (very much a case of "what's around the next bend?"). Most of my fish came from the bottom of the beat. Quality fish - a few smaller fish; but everything else was 12" plus, with a couple at 14" plus. As my old mate Tom Dixon would say "about a pound". Mind you, with Tom, anything that he catches over 8" long is "about a pound"

Fished a team of spiders - with most of the fish coming to the point fly

The first day of our annual pilgrimage to the mighty Wye. Although the old girl isn't looking quite so mighty with the very low flow. But still beautiful to the eye.

We fished in the woods where the water was quickest and connected with a few. Barbel to 5lb and chub to 3lb. All fish were well rested and swam off strongly. The weed was a constant problem and the sharp shower in the early evening was a transient one.

But another fabulous day in our favourite place. Two happy lads (one old 'un and one young 'un).

Low river with warm conditions. Brief rain shower then lots of fly life hatching for 45 mins. Nothing rising to it other than very small fish - too small for a 14 hook to get hold.

Difficult fishing today. Trotting a float with hemp and meat, caught two small chub and a dace. This is a huge stretch with various sections of shallow and deep water. I spent too much time in the shallow sections and didn't get enough time to fish the deeper water further down stream. Very low water conditions, a bright and hot day. Bring on some good rain!

A very steady evening session on a low and hot river Wye. After walking the stretch we settled in some swims with the intention of moving later on. We had a couple of barbel before the rain started which scuppered plans of moving - the rain was much needed but wasn't enough to affect the current conditions. Biggest barbel was 8.8 and swam off strongly.
