The river Taff is making the headlines locally with some good catches of suburb natural Brown Trout. The river is a good fishing height and should not disappoint

A superb very fresh hen fish taken on a sink3 line with very fast tip, and double hook home tied fly. Weighed at 19 lbs . The tale on Salmon Fishing Forum is worth a look

10 x trout 10-14 inches, March Brown Jingler and various spiders. A mild day, turning to rain later, but river still pretty high at 1ft 4 inches. There were several intense but very short-lived March brown hatches after lunch, with a lot of fish rising. I seemed to miss a lot of fish today but some of the regular anglers did very well. I'm hearing about salmon catches right up here at Brecon, which is early for so high on the river. They certainly have had the running water.

Water still very high and coming through fast but clear. Very little fly life with just a few rises to the odd LDO in the early afternoon. Just one take (a very pale, beautifully marked and fighting fit 8” fish) on a weighted pheasant tail nymph. Very pleasant late start to the season and good to have some morning sunshine before the rain set in.

With 'Cabin Fever' setting in & not having cast a fly yet this year, I rashly decided that still water was better than nothing; Why I chose Llwyn Onn I shall never know.
I am struggling to find any positives. The sun shone for an hour earlier on & the man who checks the tickets was very pleasant but maybe not a fisherman & in a bit of a hurry?
As I drove up through Merthyr Tydfil I was already getting nervous that this was going to be a massive picnic area around a body of water. I had to give it a go but did not expect to spend quite so much time picking up discarded line, tackle & rubbish. Carling Black Label is still a favourite amongst the visitors to Llwyn Onn along with the usual KFC & McDonalds containers. Wading into the water at least had the advantage of having my back to all this & I was able to listen to the gentle hum of the motorbikes as they accelerated along a particularly good straight along the shoreline.
After catching one recently stocked rainbow trout, i thought I would move around the bank to see if it was a little more reminiscent of a wild place. Much the same really , new litter & line on the bank, the road was a little closer but with the added bonus that the rain had properly set in now...not that we mind that. As I unhooked my second, slightly deformed (brachycephalic) stocked rainbow of the split fin variety, I decided to call it a day & drive back the scenic route thus avoiding the massive reconstruction of the Welsh countryside between Merthyr & Abergavenny.
It is what it is & a far cry from river fishing that WUF so kindly give us easy access to. I wish I didn't have to count these fish as my first of 2018. You never finish learning.
