Same scenario as the 24th June, but with the bonus of no (human) swimmers in the faster water. This time the barbel in the evening was 7lb 4oz, and one of the hardest fighters I have ever caught. All the fish this year have been in perfect condition, and the river is full of fry, so the long dry spell does not so far seem to have impacted the coarse fish. However, it is noticeable that far fewer salmon are leaping this year, on the Wye in general.

After fishing Duhnonw moved to this beat for 2 6-8" WBT. Water very low and hooked fish jumping (rather than diving) meant lost more than usual.

I saw a recent report of 20 fish caught which tempted me in and I keep on coming back to see if Escley can be like it was before it got butchered into E1, E2, E3 and E4. This will probably be the last experiment. The 45 min walk to start of beat from the parking was the first problem. Then low water, no flow and high undergrowth meant impossible conditions to reach the few rising fish I saw. I stopped after lunch to go in search of water.

After a tricky morning on Escley 3, I drove over the top (see piccy) for stunning views of the Herefordshire countryside. I was looking for a wild stream with water/flow and Pontithel did not disappoint. All fish were caught to various dry but a small yellow May was most productive. All WBT were of a decent size and the Grayling put up a good scrap. Nice beat.

Two brown trout caught early in the day, before the sun started beating down, one on a Klinkhammer, the other on a Sawyers Grub, best 15 1/2". Two others connected with briefly on the Klinkhammer, all in the rougher pocket water. The longer flats look amazing for the dry fly, and would probably have been great on this day, as there was plenty of fresh and clear water, but sadly I had to leave at 3pm so will have to come back to try that. A lovely beat.
