Spent all day walking around the entire reservoir trying different spots.
Caught 1 brown trout on the fly which I returned, Conditions were difficult with a very strong wind so no rainbows caught.

This reservoir can be great on good days but would welcome WW introducing a 2 fish ticket to minimise the £ lost on difficult days. Spent £20 on a four fish ticket and rod licence for the day to go home empty handed, I had 2 similar blank days at the Usk last season. Becomes expensive and makes you reluctant to go fly fishing which is not good for the sport.

Access road had lots of bad potholes. Considering the season had only just opened there was a lot of litter along the banks left by some fishermen in the worm area which spoils the location .

15 x trout 9-15 inches, Waterhen Bloa, Dark Moorgame, Woodcock and Hare's Ear. Bright and sunny, but wind still cold at times. River high but clear and just about back into fishing condition. Hatches sparse - large dark olive, march brown, stone fly. All on spiders today; nothing much to be done with the dry fly it seemed.

Beat:Gwent A.S. water at Gilwern, River Usk

Fishing:Trout (River)

Fished the Usk at Gilwern today from about 10.30 until 2.00 p.m. Sunny, with a frequently brisk , cool south- easterly wind and the river losing colour, but still pushing through with 1’ 2” on the Brecon guage and 1.4m at Llanfoist. Saw no fly until 11.30 when a 30 minutes hatch of Grannom appeared, but with no fish as yet showing interest; there were one or two Grannom even a week or so ago. Quite early this year. Bring it on!

Few LDOs put in an appearance but, from about 1 -2 p.m., March Browns got fish up and at ‘em. Most appeared to be taking surface nymphs / emergers but some were seen taking duns. Prior to this, I had one fish on a flashback PTN but then, during the hatch, I had nine fish of 10-13” off the top, all bar one on my MB parachute emerger and one on my MB Duck’s Dun. Nothing big but they loved the emerger, just as they did at this time last year. A rewarding few hours on a lovely day.

River dropping after wash-off the day before, very clear. Cold downstream wind, bright sun all day. Very small hatch of upwings at 1pm, caught and returned 2 trout on dries from bottom pool, then later on 1 on a nymph under a dry in faster run.
