A red letter day ! Lost one of 14-15lb in rocks that spent most of its time in the air (so I had a really good look at it) before the hook pulled right at the net. Had a second one on for 10 seconds or so which then fell off. Feeling pretty sorry for myself at that point but the next three of 11lb, 12lb, and 14lb all stuck so smiles all round ! Well not for Chris or James who didn't have a pull I guess (although both maintained their sense of Humphreys throughout) but I wasn't doing anything special. Down and across with a slow sinktip and a conehead. Water was at 1'9" and dirty from overnight rain. Visibility was poor (less than 1ft) but it cleared during the day and dropped to 1'6". Drive back to London was an easy one for a change !

We booked for six but only four were able to make the trip. River seemed very low - we don't fish this stretch often enough to know what 'normal' level is - but we were saved by cloudy weather and showers which resulted in the occasional bite throughout the day.

Fished from 7 till 3pm started at the top section after 5 minutes we had the first barbel (7lb). Unfortunately that was all for the day, we changed spots every hour because of the lack of the bites so tried most of the sections and different baits too.
We left just before the heavy rain. From the other side, 2 lads were sitting in the middle of the river casting towards our side was not really enjoyable. However there were no canoeists :)

Water level looked encouraging but did not touch a thing all day, despite fishing at all levels until the fast sinker started to catch the bottom. I have been to this beat a few times & I have never once seen a salmon moving? It would renew the batteries if one knew there were fish lying there. Resorted to the trout rod at lunchtime & had a few speculating with a No:18 grey duster pattern. Saw an Osprey cruising down the river 11ish & then an hour later a Peregrine handing over a dead pigeon to a juvenile in mid flight just over my head, along with a lot of squawking. Ended the day wet through above the waist (rain) but happy that I still had my wallet this time.
Thanks to all at WUF.

Started fishing around 07.30 hrs at the top of the beat then around 16 swans moved in, not a bite. Moved down river 11.15hrs. 2 barbell by 13.00 hrs ,then not a bite until around 14.20hrs then 9 more and losing 3 by 17.35hrs then they went off the feed .packed up around 18.15hrs as a long drive home. All fish caught on pellet using a pellet feeder. The river was running fast with a slight colour and a good level of water. What a GREAT days fishing. Thank you ALL at the Wye & Usk Foundation

1. With the beat as busy as it is I would expect to see more catch returns, you don't have to post where you fish just give an indication if it's fishing well or not. I do a 7 hour round trip and still post after every session!
2. I fished 5 different swims on a rotation and had to spend at least the first 10 mins in each clearing up discarded line and picking up hooks and swivels. If I can take it home so can you!!!
3. The fishing was really good I had 15 of the barbel by constantly changing swims and resting a small baited area. It pays to fish the swims where others fear to tread...
WUF it's a lovely beat but tricky for those less able, with the money the owner makes surely they can be persuaded to introduce some wooded steps to open up some of the better looking sections.
