Just 2 small grayling. Lovely beat though and was spoilt by fine views with autumn colours in a moody sunlight for most of the day.

Very difficult conditions with frost to start, strong winds and a very low clear river. We fished the top end above car park area with the usual feeder/pellet/meat/boilie without a sniff. After a nice hot bowl of soup for lunch we dropped down to the bottom field where we knew there is some slower deep water. I decided to trott maggots which was difficult in the high wind but did manage 2 cracking brownies 1 of which was over 2lb and a small grayling. The wife was still on feeder/pellet tactics and still hadn't had a bite, after a change to maggot hook bait she instantly was attached to a good barbel which matched her previous pb of 8.2lb. We then had fish steadily with the biggest being 8.8lb barbel and a 4lb chub. Thanks again Wye and Usk for the opportunity to access this stunning beat. Great access and plenty swims.

Fishing upstream with a grey duster on point and a snipe and purple on dropper. 7 takes, landed 5. Water was low and clear. Fish rising to the dry and taking with confidence. First time I have fished the Monnow, pleased with tactics and result. OOS Browns were in great condition, grayling took the dropper.

High sticking on 10ft 3WT before lunch and got 2 Grayling both to a gold head. After a blustery start the wind dropped, the sun settled and a constant hatch came on. I became preoccupied by the number of rising fish and caught one flicking out a dry submerger on the 10ft rod but after fly got wet and went down I couldn't tempt the rising fish. So, back to the car and after a quick lunch went on the dry with 7ft 3WT. Caught another 5 Grayling and 5 out-of-season WBT on a nicely tied CDC dry (barbless.com). Lyepole is a lovely beat. The water was very low and by 3.30pm the fish stopped and I was getting cold. 4 or 5 hours of nice fishing. All fish were between 10-12".

Thought I would get a day in before the forecast cold snap; I know the grayling like it cold but it's not so good for me. It turned out to be 10 deg with some sun around so quite pleasant. With the Llanstephan gauge showing 10" the river was quite low for the time of year. Found the fishing quite hard work with not many fish about, or so it seemed to me. Managed 4 grayling to 12" all on an olive spider as top dropper. The usually successful red tag and beadhead GRHE on middle dropper/point were ignored. Tried to avoid the faster shallower water to give the trout a break but nevertheless had a couple, also on olive spider. As the light faded a few rises suggested dry fly but tying them on in the aforesaid fading light was beyond me so end of session. Nice to see a salmon splashing around and a kingfisher.

Lovely stretch, hard going today though. Had both fish at dusk. Bit noisy with that air gun going off all the time! Will definitely return...

A glorious day by the river, but only the one barbel to show for our efforts. Lots of salmon on the move!

Beautiful stretch of the river Dee, too much water to fish in one day, so concentrated on the gravel runs on the middle beat below Coed Pen-y-Garth. Grayling up to 1lb (+2 small OOST) all very healthy and keen on small weighted nymphs with bright red tags,or purple/pink colours. A colder day than previous ones, river clear and at lower end of normal flow. Despite this grayling feeding freely in shallow as well as deeper water. A lot of fish in this beat, someone with more ability would have caught 3x what I did.Was trying to teach myself Czech/French nymphing to some degree of success. Saw no one else all day and am keen to return and explore the other beats.

Arrived to find the river lower and clearer than in the summer, 2 fished in the end swims past the car park without any joy, I fished in the 1st field & had 2 barbel, the first going 9lb 6oz and the second around 6lb. Both fish came after feeding and resting the swim for an hour.
