The river was very low, and flow was slow in the pools. Weather conditions were warm and sunny, although the temperature was lower than the previous day. Mayfly were hatching, and a few fish were feeding.
On the lower half of the beat, there was also a considerable amount of silt on the rocks and stones on the riverbed. On the upper half of the beat, the rocks were generally more clear of silt, indicating a run-off indicating a soil run-off problem in the central part of the beat.

We both fished fly, mainly dry but also New Zealand style with a trailing nymph below the dry fly. It was on the nymph I caught the grayling. The water was quite high and there was much of the beat we could not fish because it was too deep. But on the wide gravel beds we managed to fish. There was a mayfly hatch along with yellow may duns, pale wateries and many sedge flies. The river bed was carpeted with salmon fry in the tens of thousands!

Conditions reasonable but a bit bright. Fished for the mayfly experience. Few flies hatching and fewer fish rising

Water looked cloudy but was deceptive as it was clear

River was in great condition after the week's earlier rain. All fish caught on heavy nymphs using a variety of methods (duo, Czech), with best pushing 1lb and the rest in the 1/2 - 3/4lb range. Bulk of fish caught in an hour between 11-12. All fish were immaculate and returned safely to fight another day.

Word of warming on this beat - wading is tough. Wouldn't want to fish this with a decent flow pushing through!

A final comment to say that our experience was enhanced by Chris Price from Casting With Style...his expertise in guiding us over the day was invaluable, and the skills and watercraft taught to us will be life long skills that we can utilise on our home waters. I can't recommend him enough.

Fished from 4 - 10pm. Best time seemed around 7 - 9. Plenty of proper mayflies coming off plus smaller mayflies. Yes you have to trudge the beat and there were sections with not much activity but with careful study good pockets of fish could be found. Of the 14 fish to net most were in the 6oz-12oz bracket. One fish was over a pound and the best was a clonker of around 2lb which gave me a bit of a shock. Perhaps a further 10 shed hook before the net and a couple of those would have been better stamp also. Plenty of missed takes as well. Most fish took a large Adams/small grey Wulf. The chub were very small but there seemed a lot of them going for flies. The access points in about 8 places had been hacked back which helped otherwise access might have been difficult. At one point I took about 5 minutes to haul myself out and one pool looked very inviting with rising fish but the bank was steep and I thought better judgement was required. Very enjoyable day and one of my best on WUF waters.
