Decided to fish the Upper Wye from 10 till 2.30 and found the river much like everywhere else: clear and leg-chillingly cold at 8 degrees; just a handful of MBs and LDOs between 12 and 1, but no fish rising. Given the forecast north-easterlies and cold nights, it feels like it's going to take a while longer before the insects and fish liven up in the Wye and Usk catchments? By late morning all that was around were a few midge. In a long glide, I saw a oncer rise and, having located it, it took a size 18 pale hare's fur para emerger, and the first fish of the season proved to be a fit and fat 2.25lb 17" lady. Had a couple more on a Duracel variant. No trout by any method.

One 16" skinny BT on the dry. Taken on a small emerger, at the tail of one of the deeper pools. Most of the rising fish seemed to be sitting in the shallower water - 18" or slightly more.

Arrived at the river at around 11.30am to a trickle of LDOs but no fish rising. At around midday there was a decent hatch of LDOs and March Browns, which only lasted 15 minutes but brought fish to the surface with aggressive takes. 2 very good trout landed during that hatch to a dry March Brown pattern, 19.5 and 18.5 inches and both in very good condition for the time of year.
The rises stopped abruptly once the hatch had finished although I managed one more 12" trout about an hour later speculating with the same dry fly. Great to be back on the river and I couldn't want for a better start to the season. Hopefully hatches will start to build if the good weather holds.

River level (at Cilmery) at 0.47m and very clear; air temperature by mid afternoon around 14-15C. One small (around 9") grayling caught, two more missed. Very few insects visible and no hatch. A tough but enjoyable five hours of fishing in beautiful surroundings.
