Area:Usk - Wild Stream
Beat:Tarrell Libanus
No. of Anglers:1
This is a cumulative report based on 3 x 30 minute lunch time visits last week. 3 fish, 11, 14 and 15 inch. The Tarrell holds some large trout by wild stream standards, but they are incredibly wary. Best method recently has been to fish with a French leader and a single 3mm jig nymph to get down into the deeper holes. A lot of the deeper pools hold more fish than initially meets the eye, so would recommend spending 5 minutes (or more) simply watching for fish before you even think about casting or wading.

Area:Usk
Beat:The Breconshire Fishery
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
After work visit hoping to find an evening rise. Wasted an hour fishing nymphs on a french leader (in perfect conditions!) for just a small fish. Switched to a size 18 rusty spinner and started picking up fish in the pool tails and glides. All typical heavily spotted Usk fish from 10 to 14 inches. Finished just after 9pm, with a decidedly cold autumnal chill in the air.

A cold night and a bright, sunny start to the day didn't fill me with confidence and sure enough, it started slowly. I had one barbel in the morning and two eels (one quite chunky), then nothing until the evening when I managed another four small barbel. It's a really beautiful beat, but I do wonder if the same few swims get hammered every day.
Thanks WUF for a great day.

Water level was good & all beats were fishable; Plenty of coloured fish showing ,esp. on beat 3 but nothing touched by any of the anglers who were all fishing the fly.Lovely day with plenty of wildlife to observe including one very relaxed kingfisher that had a bit of a cough for a while; We all thought he may have just 'downed' a rather large stickleback? Thanks for a wonderful day.
