With the river up over a metre, the barbel proved to be a little elusive although chub knocked away at our pellet baits and occasionally attached themselves to the hook. We were restricted to the top end of the beat and had the frustration of a lot of weed coming down.

Fished the woods from morning till 3 taking a 1 hour rest in a swim in the second field. The river was coloured and coming through at a fair pace. All three barbel came within an hour and a half the largest was 5lb 10.
Beautiful fishery and very strong healthy fish. My first visit to the Wye and I'll definitely be returning.

Fished the Gravel Catch at 6.30pm when the sun had finally gone off the river and the wind had sub-sided. 10lb hen salmon took gently from a lie up-stream of the wires and mid-river. Pool looking superb with height on Llanstephan gauge 1ft 9ins. #10 Park Shrimp. Expertly landed by the dynamic duo: Joe Gooch and Ryan Saxon visiting from Boatside beat. Returned to the river with an explosion of white water.

Hard going today, strong winds, little fly life and few rising fish. We took the fish on small sedges and unweighted nymphs.

Groundhog Day - with an all but identical river and return as when I fished Lyepole a month ago. The low river (3 on the Byton Gauge) was in spite of heavy rain on Friday evening and Saturday morning.
As with my last trip, surprisingly, just a solitary trout; the more surprising as it was the first fish I caught. Steady, but not spectacular, progress in the Grayling department afterwards. Let's call in 30 shall we? No monsters; mostly fish in the 8-10" bracket, with a handful at 12" plus. All on a tungsten nymph.
I agree with the previous correspondent ref this beat needing a trim. Please note, this observation comes from a man who knows a thing or two about trimming - I have my hair cut twice a year; whether it needs cutting or not.

Did I say this was my favourite beat on the WUF? A hugely enjoyable end of season day on Hergest. Fished up to falls and beyond to the beat top proper. The large haul of fish was helped on by catching 4 or 5 fish from each of 3 larger/deeper pools which I fished very carefully from the tail. The coloured water helped as in clear conditions the fish spook easily on the Edw. I fished dry on a 3WT with a wide selection including Adams (without the Para bit), Duns and Olives. I didn't note which was most successful - sorry!

Parked up towards the pub due to work being done in the usual parking spot. No bother, 3 minute walk. Couldn't wish for a better September day. River unusually quiet in terms of natural flies and rising fish.
Using a variety of dry flies - like many anglers I default to 2 or 3 flies but tried 7 different dry patterns and everything worked. Size 14 hook was consistent though, and everything natural looking and no bling!
Caught consistently throughout the session and landed 18 wbt. 5" to 13" and every size in between.
Wonderful way to end the season, thank you WUF for giving me and so many other anglers days we look forward to and always enjoy.

Water was still high from the rains on Friday and very little fish moving or feeding. Only the one small trout for the day on a GRHE nymph was returned.
