An enjoyable day on Abernant. The fish did not fall on the hook, but steadily caught most of the day. Caught on nymphs at a variety of depths. Spiders and emergers. Nothing seems on work for long, but changing tac kept me in the fish. No monsters, a pound and a half grayling and a trout just over a pound were the best of the lot. All returned. One of the easier Upper Wye Beats, wading is mostly Gravel, access is good. I fish this area a lot and each beat has it's own unique character. A special Place.

River looked fine, I did struggle gaining access to the river, in the end I returned to the very start of the beat where climbing through the vegetation was possible and relatively flat. Didn't fish for long, so no fish.

Beat:Upper Longtown

Fishing:Trout (River)

River level low but still coloured from the rain early in the week. Very few fish rising and almost no hatch to speak of. Took one brown trout (7/8 in) on a black 14 klinkhammer and a lovely grayling (again in the 7 to 8 inch range taken on GHHE).
Vegetation getting slightly out of hand but river is fishable in waders. One kingfisher and 4 dippers helped the day pass by.

Excellent day’s fishing with trout to 13 inches and grayling to 15 inches. The overall quality of the fish was good with many 10-11 inch fish. Tried various nymphs and caught on all of them – Czech nymph, beaded PTN, stripped quill – but it was a change to a red tag that saw an increase in the number of fish caught, plus a couple lost. Started at the bottom of the beat and fished from 2pm – 8:30pm by which time the light was fading fast. Just about made it back to the pool at the top of the beat to catch a final trout and grayling but most of the fish came from fast runs and pools lower down. Another wonderful day on WUF water.

Fished from 8am and caught one 2.5lb rainbow trout on the bottom at 4:30pm. Didn't see any fish rising. Disappointing day really, I think the ticket price needs adjusting!

I had a very pleasant evening fishing from 4pm to about 7.30pm.I fished the comfortable swim on the roadside and despite the silk weed which seemed to be covering the river bed I had 2 chub around the 3lb mark and finished with a hard fighting barbel of 4lb 8oz. I had intended to fish a little longer but the rain started so I packed up to avoid a soaking. By the time I had put the gear away in the car, the rain had stopped so spent the next 30 mins feeding the shoal of fish under the willow on the far side of the bridge. First on the pellets were the chub then small Barbel appeared followed by 3 or 4 larger Barbel in excess of 6lb. The enthusiasm they showed in searching out the pellets made me wonder why we sometimes struggle for bites!
