15lb Salmon

1 Salmon

3 x trout 14,16 and 17 inches. A lunchtime session, eating sandwiches on the bank and watching the pool. The lower Usk was at salmon fishing height today. A very few large dark olives trickled off but no visible reaction at the surface. The dry fly rod remained unused and the fish caught all selected a size 16 Dark Moorgame, fished sub-surface on the middle dropper of a team of spiders.

Floating line with bloodworm 4ft down. Also intermediate with black snake. Fish on northern shore just off the concrete.

Superb conditions on the river and the first return visit to the Estate saw season permit holder Geoff Tyler try for a salmon on this pleasant afternoon. Fishing Loxters pool left bank, he encountered a very large fish which took his fly fished close to the bottom. The fish was in control throughout the ten minute encounter which ended with a straightened hook. The only rod on the estate this week. Geoff will be back soon to try again.

Sadly had a small fish escape my line prior to a confirmed catch so drew a blank!! Better luck next time! Great conditions water dropping flies rising, but still could not catch!!

Damsel fly was used for all three.

Beautiful day out, sunny. Could have done with a bit more cloud. Saw a few fish rising and a few small trout cruising around the flats. No fish caught due to angler haha. Missed two rides to my fly though. Fished nymphs early morning (incredibly badly) until I saw a hatch and fishes dries..
Will be coming back..

Very strong fresh fish of 15lbs taken on a red/black flying C.

1 Salmon

A 25lb fish – been in the river three or four weeks – on a Flying C. Fourth Cast! A terrific fighting fish but safely returned.
