This was the last day for me fishing the Usk this year so I decided to try any methods I have thought about using all season but not actually tried. The river was carrying a good amount of water but was still fairly clear so a streamer fished upstream was tried in the faster water and deeper pools which was hard work and only produced one fish but not the monster I was hoping for. Around midday pale watery upwings started coming off and a few more fish to 15" fell to a size 17 Para Adams, a change to a French leader with a peeping caddis and black magic nymph produced the highlight of the day when I hooked into a lump of a Trout in the pocket water above the bridge. The fish powered a good 3 meters with just its tail in the water before taking me on a stumbling dance around the rocks. I tried to keep it upstream of me but eventually it got down stream and spat the hook. Roll on next season and round two with that fish, a great memory to take into winter.

Easy to find beat, drive through the gate to the hard standing to save your legs. Had my pb barbel 9lb which bent my rod in half. What a scrap. The other barbel were around 6lb and the chub 3lb. Wish I had a proper camera as a kingfisher on the opposite bank was giving me a fishing lesson. I do not know how he managed to fly after the amount of fish he caught. Great to watch these little birds.

River had good flow and was quite clear. First swim produced one 9-inch barbel! Moved to another swim in the evening and had three more barbel to 7lb 9oz and a chub of about 31/4 lb. All on pellet with feeder. Cleared up a tangle of another angler's discarded line on the bank - why are people so careless?

Trout quarter to three quarter pounds, all taken in succession in same pool - klinkhammer. Weather cool cloudy bright, light showers.. Surprised how low the river was, considering the recent rain.

16.00 to 20.15 Leggs Meadow top end. 4 barbel in 6 to 9lb range released in landing net without removing from water and 1 chub in 3 to 4lb range on large luncheon meat chunks about 2 rod lengths out on static leger. Had fished for first 2 hours with usual halibut pellet on hook over catapult fed smaller pellets without even a touch. Thank you to M who asked for my paperwork and I hope his next day went well. At dusk it appeared a bat hit a pheasant flying across river and both ended up in my swim, neither seen to lift off.
