Blank for salmon. Still, it was good to be out on a sunny Good Friday casting and seeing how the pools have changed. Perhaps I was being optimistic, so early in the year. After a somewhat leisurely lunch, I returned to find a grannom hatch in full blast. For a while every trout in the river seemed to be rising. As it was, I rushed to put a trout rod up and just caught the end of it. Three trout 11-15 inches on F-Fly. By 2 o'clock it was all over and the river seemed completely dead once more. Many thanks to owner Barry Paraskevas for the invitation.

Dore was really low and gin clear. Walked the beat and didn't spot any fish. Fished some of the deeper pools but nothing doing. Note that this beat is really overgrown, and casting is near impossible, even roll casts difficult in most places. A French leader could do the trick, but I wouldn't go anywhere near this beat between April - October, and it is likely to be even more overgrown.

What a great beat this is, stunning surroundings, easy access, well kept but still very natural, with nice solid benches along its length, really first rate and obviously full of fish judging by the catch returns. However I struggled today, not sure what, if anything, I was doing wrong but I failed to catch. The river was fairly low and very clear with bright sunshine most of the day, the only cloudy spell came late morning just as March Browns started coming off in quite some numbers along with a few smaller flies, sadly this was very short lived only lasting a few minutes so the trout didn't have chance to respond.
I'll definitely be back for another go.

Well, after having a cracking day earlier in the week on the Lugg was hoping for a half decent day on the Monnow!! Beautiful weather 12 degrees and a good amount of LDO's coming off the water between 12-2pm, water levels perfect and gin clear, great! I know the Monnow well and who was I trying to kid , one 8 inch grayling to hand one lost and two brownies both over 2lb lost and that was all the action for 4 hrs fishing.. oh well April will be a different story

Fished the beat a few days earlier, although no fish that day. This day was much warmer and brighter, river a little low but looked in good shape. The expected hatches did not happen, or at least nowhere around where I was fishing! Did not see a fish rise all day and in early afternoon changed to nymph, using a tungsten beaded fly had a knock first cast, which was encouraging. Over the next hour had three WBT all around 1lb, one slightly larger.
All caught on the north side of the bridge at the end of short runs. The day was very pleasant and sunny, which was a contrast to previous time. This is a lovely, well maintained beat and has good features its entire length, will be back when it is a bit warmer. Thanks you to the Foundation, the booking system is second to none.

Bright day with a cool westerly breeze. River level is good and water clear. Spotted a few fry and a few nymphs making their homes under the pebbles, but no trout - still a little early in the season I think.
Very pleasant day out nonetheless and I look forward to being back up here in April or May when I'm sure those deep pools will be holding some decent fish.

Lovely spring day but spoiled by FIVE other people poaching on the opposite bank. Two people spinning and three others fly fishing in waders. The fishing was slow with very few rising fish and only a handful caught subsurface. Disappointed that more isn't being done to prevent this.
