Beat:Escley Beat 2

I was not necessarily looking forward to seeing how Escley Brook had been reconfigured. Escley 4 is the top bit of 2015 Lower stuck onto the bottom bit of 2015 Middle. There is a huge chunk of 2015 Lower gone which is a shame but still some familiar pools to get to grips with. Although booked for the day, I missed out E3 and re-parked for E2 which is essentially the top of 2015 Middle up to the pub. I don't mind change (really) but I have fished these fantastic beats from a time when they were called R42 and R43 and the nostalgia runs deep. Chopped up, disjointed, too much walking, and still the threat of angry landowners (too much red on the maps).
To the day. Only one 12" trout caught to a dry and a very stealthy 20 minute approach. It was the only time I saw any rises all day and the usual technique of putting a fly on likely water did nothing to tempt any more fish up. Too clear, too bright, too cold, too windy. The map instructions as usual where spot on but you are generally parking a way off beat starts. BUT listen I don't mean to complain too much. This is still IMHO the best wild stream in the passport (except maybe Edw). I will be back.

No fish taken. Despite being three experienced river anglers we failed to catch more than one trout between us. The temperature had dropped suddenly after several warm days and it was cold. (Back to the car at lunchtime to sit with heater on.) There was a hatch of March Browns for a very short spell around mid-day when the one trout was caught on a dry MB pattern. I had fish rising around me in a pool but with plenty of naturals to feed on it was difficult to tempt them to my artificial. Other than that, no fish seen. Still enjoyable to fish the Usk in beautiful surroundings. Thank you.

A couple of hours early afternoon on the Llynfi. Water quite low and very clear, very cold air temp. A few sporadic hatches of what looked like iron blues but no fish seen at all. Would have expected a few fish but nothing on this day.

3 trout and 2 salmon par. The stream was looking beautiful with a sequence of mouthwatering pools. Watch out though for all the fallen trees over the gorge like sections some of which must have fallen recently and look like they could break at any moment. A really wild and beautiful little stream for the energetic and agile fly fisher. Many thanks for a lovely day WUF!

One nice trout lost. The stream was looking very beautiful albeit very cold. A good Large Dark Olive hatch at 11:30 brought up one repeat rising fish. One other nice fish seen. Some nice looking pools and good water coming down from the reservoir upstream.

River low and clear, sunny in morning then more cloud. Hatches from 12 30, caught 5 rising trout, one good fish. Finished at 3 due to committments, felt hatches might easily have continued into the afternoon. Didn't fish top three pools just past the farm - 15+ canoeists were above and below the little waterfall practising er canoeing over little waterfalls...
