A lovely sunny day. Car parking excellent. A bit of a long walk for elderly carrying tackle but flat so not that bad. Steep banks but very good to find a place to sit and fish. Using halibut pellets we caught a barbel 6lbs and chub upto 4lbs.

This was the first time I had fished the Monnow, and I started out with the intention of targeting Grayling, and was not disappointed. The river was low and quite silted in places but crystal clear in others. I walked downstream to the end of the beat and saw no fish rising or moving. It was 1000hrs very bright and sunny about 16 degrees, it had been very cold the night before.
I fished upstream spiders (partridge and orange....snipe and purple size 14) and caught nine small Grayling to the half pound mark all these came from the faster water.
Later in the day I changed to nymphs and fished the slightly deeper pockets and caught seven Grayling from around the pound mark to 2lb, most took a GRHE size 14, the best two fish took a home tied PTN with a red thorax which was very pleasing.
All 16 fish were in excellent condition and returned to the river, this is a lovely stretch of river, with good water where wading is needed to reach the best spots.
Although not fishing for trout I did not see or move any during my seven hour visit, the day was finished of with a well deserved drink and meal in the highly recommended Bell at Skenfrith.

Started well with a superb barbel of 9 lbs 13 oz on the second cast of the morning carried on catching smaller barbel up to 6lbs and some nice chub with a lull in early afternoon; plenty of bites towards dusk....also lots of false bites caused by fish attacking swimfeeders

A very quick stop off - 1.5 hours fishing in very bright conditions middle of day, lower stretch only. No fly hatches, pools clear and full of small spooky fish. Landed 4 x trout 8 to 10 inch and missed a few. 4 x salmon parr as well. All on nymph below klinkhammer. Unlike some other wild stream beats the fish here almost always prefer nymphs.

I could only mange a morning session and with very little rising and only a few sedge coming off made for tricky fishing. I caught only one small trout on a PTN nymph and lost a couple of others, maybe in the late afternoon/early evening things would have got going. As always I enjoyed the session and casting under the tree canopy, getting the fly to go where you want it to is a challenge.

A brilliant day by my standard's and experience, anyway got off to a flier 2nd cast picked up a brownie around 15inches a PB for me, then four grayling in as many casts all in the same run around 1/2 a pound or so. Then another stunning brown of around the same size as the first . Landed a further 10 or so grayling later in the morning and early afternoon, along with a small brown of around 9 inches. All in all a great day in stunning surroundings. All fish returned.

Caught on a Snipe and Purple North country Spider. Had a great day, but wished I had a map showing the depths around the Bridge, as the river at places came up to mid chest level, and at times I couldn't find a route to wade around. River beautiful clear, a touch higher than perfect perhaps. Several takes that I missed.
