A very cold day with the river up and carrying some colour. A trickle hatch of LDOs started at 12.30pm and finished at 3pm, with a few trout rising to them. The rises seemed localised to pretty much one pool. We managed 7 trout in the 12oz - 1lb class with size 14 CDC Dun seeming to be to their liking. Tough conditions but braving them was well rewarded. Lovely to be out and opening our accounts for the new season.
Some constructive criticism - the directions could be better and would suggest that as well as directions assuming you're coming from the north, to include some assuming you might be coming from the south up the A40.
WUF Note : Thank you for this. The beat information has now been updated to include directions from Builth Wells, Abergavenny and Merthyr Tydfil.

Fishing a March brown, with a nymph on a dropper. Not even a nibble. 1 large fin seen but nothing else on a very cold late afternoon.

The river was to high for a novice like me but a nice day anyway. Also saw a pair of Goosanders.

River high and rising from melt water. A lot of colour to the water. Coarse fishing with pellet. Trout about 2lbs a happy accident. Trout very silver and may possibly have been a sea trout.

Had two fish on but both came unstuck. The water was fishable but a bit coloured. There were some Large Dark Olives hatching

1 x 7 inch trout, Goldbead Hare's Ear, first of the season. Well, I would have wished to be out on the Usk today, but there was too much water coming down it for my liking. There was plenty of cold water tumbling down the Honddu from the Black Mountains also, although it was certainly fishable. However, I suspect all the little trout except this one were still tucked up in bed and perhaps I should have been. What a strange spring! It was snowing hard while I was fishing a lake yesterday, although the rainbows were really going for it. Today I saw marsh-marigolds in full bloom in a Monmouthshire bog, which is at least 6 weeks early. Some hawthorn hedges near Abergavenny are already in leaf.

Fished the upper Taff (mtaa). River had risen over night and high but very clear. I fished a team of weighted nymphs on a French leader. Managed to catch 2dozen wbt ranging between 1/2lb up to 2 1/2lb. All fish seem to have spawned well during the winter.

Beautiful day for the first of the season. Not surprisingly river very high after the winters rain. Didn't see a fish let alone catch one. Air temp about 7 degrees. Spent a pleasant couple hours with red kites overhead. Must put a mention in for my b&b the Hundred House Inn at the top of the beat. 01982 570231 or mob 07951 600194. Lovely simple accommodation and great basic food. Several bars with log burners. All very friendly. Cost of b&b £30. I had deep fried mushrooms followed by lasagne and chips washed down with a bottle of wine. Cost of food and wine, £25.

Opening day and the river high and rising. More than ever in hope rather than expectation we plugged away. Tried the fly and the fc without any joy. Great to be back out fishing and here's to a successful season on the Wye. Tight lines to all.
