A mixed day, river low and perfect fishing weather after a cool night. Wonderful surroundings, kingfishers and leaping salmon - it's not all about catching!
Fish came to a variety of baits and tactics maggot on the stickfloat for many minnows, the brownie and the chub (2lb and 4lb). Barbel all came on ledgered/ swimfeeder bait, much better sport later in the day.
A cordial visit from Don helped no end. Thank you, we'll be back.

17 x grayling 10-15 inches, 5 x out of season trout 9-14 inches. A slow morning after a cold misty start and, although pale wateries were hatching, nothing was rising. Use of a team of nymphs only produced unwanted trout. However, things livened up after about 1 o'clock and the grayling, mostly in the 12-14 inch range, were all taken during the afternoon on a dry Grayling Steel Blue. This part of the valley looks absolutely gorgeous in the sunshine at the moment - wonderful colours.

At 9.00 the sun was just breaking through the dense mist on the tops of the hills where I live and the thermometer was showing a chilly 3 degrees.
Instinct said leave it an hour before making the 20min drive to the river but eagerness got the better of me.....mistake! It stayed misty and cold down in the valley until midday and by that time after standing in cold water casting to nothing for two hours I was freezing.....
Around 1pm the sun broke through and flies began to appear followed by sporadic but determined splashy rises. I was trying to target only grayling and the rising fish looked like trout so I fished subsurface until in frustration I decided to move to drys and took 2 trout on barbless Tupps, both around 12" Moving upstream and in a shallow pool came another similar size trout followed by rejection after rejection of the different dries I was trying. Swapped to a gold bead Copper John and came two nice grayling again around the 12" mark. Interesting was the total lack of action in the deep pools. Fished till 6pm.....Btw the banks are a jungle of Himalayan balsam ...make sure you find your way out before it gets dark!!!
