First time out on this beat. With a coloured & rising river, I fought for the 3 I had, finding it hard to wade or get through the wooded areas.

A hard day's bait fishing in a heavily swollen Irfon. Conditions were awful and the flow was as brutal and relentless as the morning rain! Lost more rig than we caught fish - One small, barely legal grayling and four tiny but well conditioned brown trout. (Does a 1.5 metre section of oak count?)
Love this stretch but nature dealt us the ace of spades today - Early finish and a hot coffee were the highlights.

29 x grayling 9-16 inches, 16 x out of season trout 7-15 inches, trotting. A warmer day, ending in wind and rain. River still really in flood at 2 foot 3 inches with a big current, but going down and reasonably clear. Fished some quiet water in the edge off the main flow and some quite nice grayling of 15 and 16 inches were prepared to co-operate - when unwanted trout, still very much to the fore, were not pushing in ahead of them. A few large dark olives hatched, but nothing rose. Salmon showing at dusk.

I had hoped to fish the lower end of the beat but the water level was over the path just round the corner so I settled into a swim nearer the start of the beat. G went to his usual swim about half way down. The water level was slowly dropping and fining down. After a while with no bites at all fishing the feeder I decided to move downstream and try the swims near the corner. G had managed to catch two good chub with one approaching 7lbs.
After a blank 2 hours we returned to my original swim. G found a rock on the bottom and lost his end tackle. While he was making repairs I managed to catch 2 good chub and a barbel in quick succession. G then hooked a barbel which immediately took him under the rock and another set of tackle was lost. G gave up in disgust as dusk was approaching while I managed to add another couple of big chub as night and the rain all too quickly fell around me.
The last hour saved the day.

Poor day. The river looked great with some colour, disappointed.

Beat:Pwll y Faedda near Erwood

Fishing:Winter Grayling

No. of Anglers:1

13 x grayling 10-16 inches, 13 x out of season trout 7-14 inches, trotting. A cold day and very high water, although it is slowly clearing and dropping. With the Llanstephan gauge at 2ft 6 inches, I wouldn't normally get into the river for heaven, at least not very far in. However, it was possible to find some steadily flowing water near the bank, running over a ford at a pool tail, normally ankle deep or dry gravel, today about waist deep. Grayling, including a number of nice 15 and 16 inch fish, were feeding and sheltering there. However, unwanted trout kept arriving to interfere with the operation. Marginal fishing in several ways.

Heavy overnight air frost and a river that had risen 1.2m overnight produced 1 bite, an eel. Despite fishing 4 pegs that have previously produced with extra water no other bites. Roll on next year.
