A challenging day, with the river still running low & clear & with a change in weather conditions. Adapted a pro-active approach to the day, moving swims many times & trying a variety of baits (halibut pellets of various sizes & a range of fish meal based boilies & meat) & sticking with the normally productive methods of the feeder or PVA bags. We eventually found a few fish feeding, taking a couple from one swim at the downstream end of the woods early afternoon & a third, a couple of hundred yards further upstream just before dusk, an enjoyable & fulfilling day on the Wye as always.

3 Barbel

A day of light cloud and a little early morning drizzle. Arrived at midday had a walk along the beat and pre baited a couple of swims. Had the place to myself and the first Barbel of 7 1/2lb arrived after about an hour. Caught the second Barbel about hour and a half later weighing in at 5 1/2lb. Had a quiet spell then had a Chub of 3lb 5oz. Started to rain at about 5pm when I had the final Barbel of 7lb 5oz. It then lashed down so I packed in and headed back to the holiday cottage. 3 Barbel, 1 Chub

A lovely stretch of the river, loads of overhanding trees and nice looking swims. A bit quiet on the day we fished and the river was low and running clear, and between the 4 anglers we had 4 barbel and 3 chub, all on maggot feeder.

Half of the fish caught were on dries even though not much rising. Odd fish caught here and there, no real hot areas. Good day nice weather easy wading. The big black bull stood near the gate and took no notice of me at all....luckily!

8 Trout, 12 Grayling

Just fished for the morning by the hut - no bites on meat or pellet. Very busy on the opposite bank, I might be old fashioned, but I thought that the mid-point of the river marked the swim when somebody is fishing from the opposite bank, but not on this beat...
WUF Note: Etiquette aside, the legal position on river fisheries is that you are not allowed to wade beyond the mid point of the river. Doing so constitutes a trespass.

2 x grayling 10 and 11 inches, 5 x out of season trout 6-10 inches, Gold Bead Hare's Ear. The first time I have managed to get to Chanstone this year. A warm, dull, rainy day. I found the little Dore very, very low, 0.21 on the Peterchurch gauge and, unusually, extremely clear. The bottom part of the beat was full of very visible, easily spooked, small grayling. Nothing was rising however. I experimented with different nymphing methods, but it was not till near the top that I worked out that, on this day and in these conditions at least, a single size 16 nymph cast upstream on a tapered leader seemed to work better than anything else. So a couple of fish to record.

First time on this stretch, very impressed. Low water but managed to find a few fish. Would fish this stretch again.

Good day, and Mick as usual was particularly helpful.

Tough day. River low and cold with good clarity mixed with bright conditions seemingly put all but 1 barbel into a hunger strike! We tried multiple swims and trotted both bread and pellet and the usual static fishing. On reflection it may have been worth taking a few pints of maggots but sometimes you get days where you just need to soak up the sun instead.
