River off the bottom end of the gauge. A lovely sunny day in beautiful surroundings. Saw 3 red grilse showing in cables/oaks area. Water too slack for fly. Ignored efforts with small spinners. Had a nice afternoon on Rock drinking coffee and heckling each other's improving speycasting.

A better day with 4 barbel (including 2 doubles), 1 chub and the usual number of dace. This was our third (annual) visit to this area and, despite the low water level, our best by far. The 21 barbel for the 4 days were all caught using ledger tactics, at various times after 1.00 pm (we started fishing around 10.00 am each day), with the float used to maintain interest during what is generally regarded as the quieter periods. Not spectacular but, taking all factors into account, a successful and very enjoyable few days in a beautiful area. We are already planning our return trip for next year.

Water very low. Beautiful venue, one of my favourites. Fished hard all day, biggest chub 3lb. Difficult conditions - extremely warm day with bright sunshine. Will be back!

Second day of two day trip. River still very low and clear. Trotting with maggots produced some nice dace and some reasonably sized chub. All the barbel were relatively small, although a larger fish was lost just as I packed up. All the barbel were caught on the feeder with long hook links with pellets as bait.

Lovely beat, good water. Easier fishing down the bottom of the beat, less trees. Don't agree it is OK for waders. I only fished an hour and then I suffered a cut at the back of the ankle in my waders (had them 40 odd years with never a leak) and it is too deep in a lot of pools for them anyway, so I will definitely use chest waders next time with my studded boots on. Plenty of fish rising but couldn't tempt one with a small klinkhammer, no good Czech nymphing either.

Blank for salmon. A surprise from a chub of a good 5 pounds which saw fit to take a small Bann Shrimp. Resident fish were showing in Dog Hole and Upper Lines, as you might expect. An interesting chat to Mick Sutton, who gillies here and who has done some useful access work, which is much appreciated. At this water level, today was a very long shot. However, I had a wash-off from the first week of the season so I thought I would use it rather than lose it. And it's always interesting to fish through pools at low levels. Easy to ford the river on tail of Windmill on this occasion.

3rd day of a 3 day visit to the Wye, first 2 days on How Caple Court were difficult. 1st time on this venue and what an introduction. Perfect weather, heavy cloud most of the day. Started 1st thing on the far bank 2nd swim and had a 6lb barbel first cast, nothing further for the next 2 hours so moved to the road side bank and fished the last swim below the rapids. Caught chub and barbel consistently for the rest of the day.
Finished up with 5 barbel (best of 8lb 12ozs) and 8 chub (best fish of 4lb 4ozs). All fish caught on feeder tactics with pellets. Fantastic days fishing.

5 Barbel, 8 Chub
