8 x grayling 13-16 inches. An evening session in some of lowest water conditions I can remember on the upper Wye - 3 inches on the Llanstephan gauge. There are whalebacks of bleached gravel where I saw salmon spawning back in December. A house guest came out to fish with me for a while, wearing calf length wellington boots rather than waders and to my amazement he walked right over to the Radnor side without getting wet. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would have said it couldn't be done. The fishing was not up to much, with very little rising. I stuck to the dry fly and wandered about disconsolately picking up the odd 6 inch trout and various parr. However, I stayed to the end in the hopes of some blue winged olive action before dark. Well, there were a few BWO spinners in evidence, but in the last hour some decent-sized grayling on a gliding pool tail started to get interested in, not the BWOs, but small brown sedges of some sort which were busy on the surface. Sid Neff's Hairwing Sedge in size 16 proved acceptable and I was kept busy for a bit without moving my position. It's early for really good grayling fishing, the water was warm, the fight somewhat lack-lustre and virtually every one of the fish (most carrying freshwater lice) had to be held up in the current for a minute to recover before kicking off. Some rain would be good about now.

First time on this beat enjoyed a pub lunch at the pub overlooking the beat then fished with my son from 2:30pm - 7:30pm. Some of the hardest fighting barbel ever up to 8lb caught on groundbait and pellet in swimfeeder. Really great day thank you. Lost several fish also due to hook pulls.

First visit to this stretch. Although info states that access is good, found that my car grounded continually on the tall vegetation, so owners of nicer cars should take care. Also, whilst the stretch is almost two miles in length, there seemed to be no more than half a dozen accessible swims. It is however a lovely stretch and allowed me a prolonged trotting session that produced many chub, two dace and a barbel to sweetcorn. Would like to return when the vegetation dies back a bit and allows the stretch to be explored fully.

11 Barbel and at least that number of Chub caught. Chub caught both ledgering and on the float. A good day. Nice venue although a few more swims cleared on the top half of the stretch would be welcome.
