Nothing caught. Two or three fish rose on the lower flats to some dark olives for about half an hour around lunchtime and I am afraid I left an Imperial in one. Rather clumsy.

Lovely beat to fish. All the barbel came in one swim, but there are so many swims to choose from and they all look productive.

Drizzle in the morning, brief sunshine in the afternoon and a chill wind. River was slightly coloured but looked fine. Saw perhaps half a dozen upwings come off the water around 1pm, but didn't spot any trout.
Fished nymphs without luck and wrapped up just before 3pm as I started to get a little cold. Despite the chill, a really beautiful spot and always enjoyable to spend a few hours in peace listening to the sounds of the river.
Most exciting moment of the day was while changing flies standing in the tail of the pool just upstream of the bridge. A cormorant that had clearly submerged itself a long way upstream suddenly surfaced a couple metres in front of me and took off in a panic. I nearly had a heart attack.

A grey day brightened by the capture of seven year old daughter Scarlett's first trout. Ten inches of speckled olive and built like an eel! I chipped in late in the day with a nice grayling.

A gusty downstream wind with calmer conditions from about 3pm at which time the sun made a welcome appearance. Fished weighted nymphs with a touch of red.

All started off well trotting maggot and in first ten minutes landed a clonker of about 5 pound. Then the wind picked up and played havoc with my centrepin so decided to switch to feeder. Did not get a nibble for about two hours then found a lovely looking spot. Fish came every cast for an hour or two. Smallest was 2 pound, all the rest between 2-3 pounds, a lovely beat with a good number of chub. I lost 2 or 3 and got smashed by 2 fish which were very heavy.

My third time at this venue and it's just as nice in winter as in summer. Plan was to fish for Barbel and Chub while stopping to drop deadbaits into any pikey looking slacks on my way up and down the river but leaving my deadbaits in the freezer stopped that idea. In the end the Barbel eluded me but I had five great condition Chub with the biggest weighing 4lb exactly and another at 3 1/2 pounds. All fish were taken on ocean pride squabs with hemp and pellet in the feeder, with two caught using a centrepin.
I also removed another angler's litter, a squashed hemp tin by the river in the bottom field.
5 Chub
