Managed another couple of hours on the upper taff/MTAA waters today. Did not get onto the water til gone 14:00 but there was a good couple of ldo' and brook dunns/March browns on the water with a couple of fish feeding in a couple of runs despite it being late in the day for so early on in the season. Managed a dozen fish up to 2 1/2lb on nymphs and dry.

Fished the bottom end of the beat from 8am-6pm. Overnight temp of -2 wasn't great and the river was pushing through (1.1m) and running clear, the water felt very cold! We fished the float during the morning but bites where few and far between with only one trout around 1.5lb. We them moved over to the feeder in the afternoon (pellet & maggots) and only had the two bites, a barbel around 6.5lb and a chub of 2.5lb. All in all a tough day. On reflection fishing the slower deeper water further up on the beat might have been more productive.

A frost during the night I suspect knocked back any real chance of getting a late season barbel or two. The chub also seemed to be somewhat elusive although we managed to get a small 2 pounder on the bank. Fished feeder and pellet which, on reflection, was probably the wrong approach in the conditions. River had a decent flow but fairly clear. This stretch is not prolific, but in the right conditions will probably provide some good sport. Will try again next season.

Fished the upper Taff from Quakers Yard up today. Water had dropped a little over night and despite the cold downstream wind all day I managed to catch trout up to 1 1/2lb as well as loosing a much larger fish 3lb plus on both dries and nymphs.

Salmon spinning - blank. A bright day, cold wind and a high river - 2 foot 5 inches at Llanstephan - which doesn't particularly suit this beat. Still, I tried the various lies without success and put back quite a collection of trout of different sizes.

Sunny, blustery day for first of season. Tried both spinner and fly but no luck - sun out and water high & coloured. Fly fishing well from right bank at Windmill though.

Despite the snow melt and river rising in the early hours in the morning the upper Taff fished really well for opening day. Started off on the bugs in the deep/fast runs and when there was a prolific hatch of march browns and ldo's (more March browns than ldo's) the fish were looking up (eventually). Managed a dozen or so fish with 5 fish being over 2lb and two maybe bigger. Hard to say as I do not take a weighing net with me.

River in superb condition now, 2ft 6inch and running clear.Very good reports from coarse fishermen this last weekend again on a dropping and clearing water. No sign of any salmon yesterday with 3 rods on the water, but with conditions as they are we can be hopeful. Just need some consistent angling effort now.
