Fishing:Trout (River)

Stiff SW breeze and choppy water made fly fishing difficult. One rainbow per rod at approx. 2.5lbs. Worm fisherman were doing better by fishing off the bottom.
Area badly littered by debris left by some fishermen.

River looked in good condition and only a little higher than summer level. Sunny intervals although it was a cold wind. Nevertheless I'm afraid I blanked. It may have been a little too early in the season or my technique. I know there are some feisty wild browns in this part of the river so I'll just have to try harder next time! Thanks to WUF for the help in booking the beat.

7 x trout 9-14 inches, on spiders, Waterhen Bloa and Woodcock and Hare's Lug. Despite a very chilly downstream wind, the river seems to be providing a little more action now and there was no need for the heavy nymphs this time. A slow trickle hatch of march browns went on through the middle of the day and large dark olives were about as well. Fish were rising, although so far they seemed to be showing a preference for the olives. It was remarkable how they moved forward into the fast water to take hatching fly as the day progressed. GW of London, in his recent report on Ashford House, asked whether people think the march brown is making a come-back on the Usk? I have the impression it is, and have lately seen it almost on a daily basis in various parts of the river. It does seem to taking the fish a while to switch on to them, but I'm sure they will do so once the hatches become intense. The period of activity seems to be from around 11 to maybe 3 (as it was today) and at this time of year, if you see a rising fish, you have a very good chance of persuading it to take.

Fishing:Salmon

Fished 3hrs for salmon. Weather and water perfect at .78m No luck at Wires and Rock. Switched to trout at 12 and landed two trout below Rock. Best 8oz. John Phillips landed 3 and lost 3 at the wood stream.
Previous two visits water too high at 1.9m and 1.1m so unable to wade and casting proved difficult from the recently eroded banks.
