Heavy overnight air frost and a river that had risen 1.2m overnight produced 1 bite, an eel. Despite fishing 4 pegs that have previously produced with extra water no other bites. Roll on next year.

4 barbel to 6lb 2oz taken early on on pellets. After that, bites were very hard to come by and when they did we lost the fish. A very difficult day in what looked to be good conditions but pleasing to wet the net a few times. Highlight of the day was seeing a very large pike attack a feeder being wound in!! As darkness fell, the heavens opened for the fourth time that day and we started the long walk from the bottom of the beat back to the car. Still, a day on the Wye beats any other day! Thanks WUF.

Nice beat. Went to catch chub and could not get through the huge shoals of dace. Only managed 7 chub, all around ten inches. Next time will leave maggots off the menu and fish with pellet.

Day started badly after I was nearly hit by a farmer driving a pickup truck like Colin McCrae over the bridge forcing me to dive out of the way bashing my elbow and hip in the process!!!! Chap didn't even stop!
Anyway, picked myself up off the floor, composed myself and carried on. Fishing was hard, very few fish about. Had 6 on various heavy tungsten nymphs but just couldn't get in the zone after my near death experience so called it a day after 3 hours and headed home.
Searched the local farms for the pickup to no avail.

One grayling just over 2lbs, real beauty. Trotting with maggots was more yielding than dry fly or nymph. Very quiet after 3.30pm. Forecast rain helped make our decision to retire to local hostelry.

Perfect day for it, warm with a little cloud. River was carrying around half a metre of water with a little colour. The chub came in the morning with no barbel showing until that last few hours before dark. All fish were in excellent condition with the barbel ranging from around six pounds up to around nine pounds. All fish were found in the upper meadows where the river can be difficult to access in places.
If you fish this beat until dusk, make sure you take a torch with you as walking back up through the hill in the wood after dusk would be unsafe. The Cormorant population seems to be thriving. I saw several in groups of up to four birds and one popped up right in front of me after diving for its prey.
A great day out on our favourite river, thanks to Wye and Usk Foundation.
8 Barbel, 2 Chub
