Beat:Aberbwtran

Fishing:Trout (River)

Arrived mid morning, a few olives hatching but nothing rising. After walking the length of the beat fishing olive patterns I decided to try a weighted fly as the water was quite fast. I chose a Claret seals fur nymph, ribbed with copper wire and a gold head. I had two small trout in two casts then decided to return to the start of the beat.
I had a few pulls then attached to a trout approx. 1 1/2 lb which took the fly in deep water. It immediately came to the surface, jumped twice, shook his head and got off. (My version of "catch and release" !!!)
I enjoyed the river and will make an effort to return to get my own back on that fish.

In two minds about the Dolgau beat. Perfect scenery as good as you will see anywhere. River looks good, but I found it hard to find places where you could stand in the river to fish upstream. I guess most other fisherman would stick to the bankside as it really is tricky to wade out with lots of deep boulder strewn pools, but nevertheless an enjoyale day in a great spot. Do not attempt to walk to the lower end of this beat by trying to walk down the left side path marked in green dots on the wuf map starting from Llanwrthwl bridge unless you have had sas jungle training. I am serious, it's a jungle with no noticeable path to be seen. its much much easier to walk along the footpath on the main road to a gate which takes you back down to the river where there is an open path.
WUF note: the map and instructions ask anglers to use the path adjacent to the road as there is no path from the bridge to the lower section along the river's edge. Our apologies to S P & anyone else who has tried to access the lower section this way. We will try to make the instructions clearer.

One about 8-10 pounds that I thought was mine before a distance release. Then contact with another fish taking line bringing the clutch to life before everything went slack again!

Nice venue, weather was mild and overcast. River level was falling after recent rain. Fished the right bank. All fish came to pellet feeder tactics.

This was the first time I've fished the Wye for barbel and overall I'm really impressed with the quality of fishing, the ease of booking and the really friendly bailiff that greeted me. It was really nice coarse fishing for barbel while a salmon angler was wandering up and down casting a fly in all the pools - not something we ever see in deepest, darkest Oxfordshire.

Very pleasant day, beautiful surroundings. Not many available swims considering the length of the beat. There were several at least two non wye usk anglers fishing the far bank.
WUF note: If you come across suspected poaching please follow the instructions on the "What to do Guide" that comes with your booking information.

Cracking day - lots of tugs but no fish. Still a top day. I will be back for more and want to see what else is on offer in the area.
